WILLIAM JAMES MORRISON, F TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.,4
FIREARM.
Speeication of Letters Patent.
Patented-Nov. 423, 1920.
Application led March 22, 1918. Serial No. 228,905.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that 1W1LLIAM JAMES MoR- msoN, a subject of the Kin of Great Britain, residing at Toronto, rovince of 0ntario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to an automatic, or gas operated, irearm of the repeating type, such as disclosed in my companion application filed December 7, 1917, bearing Serial Number 205971.
Theobject of the present invention is to furnish a firearm of the above'type with a stockl that may be easily and quickly converted into a polyped gun support or rest for the. barrel of the gun, to facilitate supporting and accurately aiming the-gun.
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel means for Adetachably connecting the stock parts to a pistol handle section of the firearm.
The above and other objects are attained by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, reference being directed to the drawings which illustrate the invention in one of its' applications and adaptations, in which;
Fi re 1 is a sideelevation of a portion of the firearm on the line 1-+1 Fig. 6, partly in section;
Fig. 1A is a longitudinal sectional view -of the barrel portion ofthe firearm;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view, partly in plan and partly in section of the barrel portion of the firearm;
Fig. 3 is a viewv similar to Fig. 1 showing the position of parts for placing a cartridge in a barrel;
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the breech portion of the irearm, partly in plan;
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing a cartridge ejeoting and holding mechanism; and
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view of a portion of the firearm on the line 6--6 Figs. 1 and 2 showing the'portion of the stock in position as a tripod or rest.
Similar numerals 'of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
In the drawings and L51 denote portions of a stock having the inner ends there. of pivotally connected or hinged, as at 52 and the portions 50and 51 articulated by toggle members 68 that will retain the portions in tripod or rest form, as shown in Fig; .6.
he portion 51 has an apertured lug 61 adapted to engage the pistol handle 62 of the breech portion 12 of the firearm. The* pistol handle 62 has an` opening and recess 58 providing clearance for a locking pin 57, said pin having a head 59 in the recess of the pistol handle engaged by a spring 60, which holds the locking pin normally retracted. The lower end of the locking pin v is adapted-to engage in the apertured lug 61 and is forced therein by a stud 56 on a lever 53, pivoted, as at 54:, in a recess of the stock .portion 50. A spring 55 in the stock por- 'tion 50 holds the outer end of the lever flush .ment with the pistol handle.
The lower portion of the fore stock 17 has a curved locking pin 65 provided with a shoulder 67 and spring 66, and with the stock portions 50 and 51 in polyped gun support or rest formation, as shown in Fig. '6, the
curvedlocking pin 65 is adapted to engage in the apertured lug 61 andA be retained therein by the stud 56 of the lever 53 carried bythe stock portion 50. It is therefore apparent that the gun may rest upon the polyped support or rest afforded by the stock portions 50 and 51 and may be properly sighted by tilting the gun through the medium of a pistol handle 62. This novel gun stock 'permits of a shoulder firearm, bein readily converted intoa polyped supporte gun.
Considering the remaining portions of the firearm, which have been described in detail in my companion a plication, bearing Serial No. 205,971, filed ecember 7, 1917, 15 denotes a trigger which when pulled upon releases the hammer 14' and this hammer strikes a firing pin 63 which in turn strikes the cap of the cartridge in the chamber-of the barrel 11, exploding the cartridge and driving the bullet out of the barrel. An enormous pressure is instantly generated by the gases of the explosion and these gases under pressure will enter the port 32 of the barrel 11, pass through a port 31 and impinge against a piston head 28 in the cylinder 27. The head 33 of the cylinder has check valve parts and in connection with the port 34. When the pistonhead 28 is moved backwardly the spring 37 1s placed under compression and the bridle 18 is azine 16 in position. At the same time, the
Other reference numerals of the drawing designate similar parts referred to in my companion application Serial Number 205,971.
Although the detailed description of the arm isV described and claimed in my copending application Serial Number 205,971 and is shown and described in the present application in connection with the same, it is not intended to be limited thereby as the present invention may be combined with a gun or firearm of any description to which it may be 'applicable and adaptable, and which may be provided with the pin actuated securing member in such a manner as to co-act and cooperate with and between the firearm and the present invention to providea means for attachably and detachab securing the combination.
aving now described my invention what I claim is 1': A firearm having a detachable stock, comprising a movable polyped portion adapted for supporting the barrel portion of the firearm, a locking pin carried by a portion of the firearm, means carried by the stock to cooperate with the locking pin for detachably securing the stock to the firearm,
and a spring actuated lever to hold the pin and locking means inoperative position.
2. In a firearm, a detachable bifurcated 4. In a firearm having a pistol handle, a
detachable, bifurcated stock, a barrel inember, Vlocking means disposed at the pistol handle and adapted for holding the stock in engagement with the barrel, and a locking means comprising a locking pin and a coacting and coperating spring-actuated lever, said locking means communicating with the stock and the barrel members in such a manner as to co-act and cooperate in detachably locking the barrel to the stock.
5. The combination of a firearm, locking pins carried by portions thereof, a bifurcated stock adapted for attachment to the locking pin portions' of the firearm, and means carried by the stock adapted to actuate the locking pins to hold the stock in engagement with portions of the firearm.
6. The combination with a firearm having a pistol handle of a locking pin carried by thel pistol handle, a swinging bifurcated stock detachably held by 'said locking pin and adapted as a polyped rest member when attached, and spring actuated means carried `by the stock adapted for connecting the converted stock to a barrel portion of the firearm as a rest member therefor.
7. The combination of 'a firearm, locking pins carried by portions thereof, a bifurcated stock adapted for attachment to the locking pin portions of the firearm, and
spring means carried by the stock adapted to actuate the lockingV pins to hold theA stock in engagement with portions of the firearm.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
