Be it known that .l, Josnru SIDNEY NEWLIN, a citizen of the Uni ted States, resid ing at Varnville, in the county of Hampton and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful improvements in Hair-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hair-pins; and its object is to provide a device of this character which is simple and inexpensive in construction and which is adapted to be readily inserted into the hair for the purpose of clamping the same and holding it securely in position.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of oppositely-arranged arms which are pivoted together and are held normally spaced apart by means of a spring interposed between them. Clamping members are formed integral with the arms and extend longitudinally therefrom, and the free ends of these members normally contact to form a point.
'lhe invention'also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pin. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the pin.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is an arm, having parallel flanges 2 at the sides thereof, and extending from these flanges are cars An arm 4 isarranged substantially parallel with the arm 1 and has an ear 5 extending inwardly therefrom and between the ears A pivotpin 6 projects through the ears and serves to hold them together. A spring-strip 7 is interposed between the arms 1 and 4 and projects between the flanges 2 and into a recess 8, formed in the ear 5. Clamping members 9 extend longitudinally from the arms 1 and 4E, and these members are preferably crimped, and the ends thereof normally contact, as shown at 10.
In using the device herein described the arms 1 and 4: are pressed toward each other, so as to compress or tension the spring 7. The clamping member-s9 will therefore be moved apart, and the pin can then be inserted into the hair and moved to a desired position. It is then retained in place by releasing the arms 1 and a, so as to allow spring 7 to move the members 9 toward each other, thereby clamping the hair therebetween and preventing the displacement of the pin. The pin when constructed in accordance with my invention can be made at slight cost and not only serve to securely hold the hair in place, but also is held against accidental displacement.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as 1 am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and i therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall avithin the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hair-pin com prising an arm having flanges extending along the sides thereof, parallel ears integral with and extending from the flanges, a second arm, a recessed ear extending there from and pivoted between the first-mentioned cars, a spring-strip seated at its ends Within the recessed ear and between the flanges, respectively, and clamping members integral with the arms and normally contacting at their free ends, said members being crimped in the same plane to form substantially rectangular apertures therebetween.
