SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,702, dated February 28, 1905.
Application filed June lO, 1903. Serial No. 160,855.
Be it known that I, DAVID E. Ones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State ofl New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and original Improvement in lVlanholeCovcrs; and l do hereby declare the Afollowing; to be a lull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will ena-ble others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bei ng' had to the accompanying' d rawing's, and to numerals ol reference marked thereon, which form a part o'lI this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in covers 'for the manholes of' sewers, water-mains, vault-inlets, electrical comluits, and the like, whether they be round, square, or other shape in plan, the same to be employed more particularly in connection with smooth pavements of wooden blocks, brick, asphalt, concrete, etc. g but theuse of said covers is not limited to such pavements only,
The objects of the invention are to avoid the objectionable ring' or rattle occasioned by the metallic covers when run over by a rapidly-moving vehicle, to provide a non-sonor ousV cover which will be durable, but inexpensive, and to obtain other advantages and results, some of which will be referred to hereinafter in connection with the description of the working,` parts.
The invention consists in the improved manhole-cover and in the arrangements and combinations ol parts oli the same, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and linally embraced in the clauses ol? the claim.
Re'lerringto the accompanying' d rawing's, in which like numerals ol reference indicate corresponding' parts in each of the several ligures, Figure l is a plan ol my improved cover. Fig. 2 is a section ol the same, taken on line of. Fig'. 3 is a sectional view illustrating' a modilication oil. construction, and Fia'. el: is a detail section taken at line y.
In said drawings, l0 indicates the metal l'rame or body oli the cover, which is pre'lerably ol. malleable iron or cast-steel and is annular in plan and ol' one integral piece. it is n'ovided at its u ner ede'e with an outwardlyi i e,
extending' flange ll. to rest on the manholehead (not shown) in any suitable manuel'. At the lower edge said 'trame l0 is provided with a flange lil, on which a bottom plate 12 is seated. The bottom plate may be integral with the frame, as indicated in Fig'. 3. lhe outwardly-extending flange '13 on the under side is preferably tm'nished with recesses ll1lf,'in which is rubber insulation or rubber eiishioning material 15, adapted to prevent the production ol sound or the transmission under certain conditions ot electrica l currents. Un der certain other conditions the parts '15 may be of copper, brass, lead, or librous matter. rl `he frame and its bottom plate together lorm a pan-like receptacle for wooden blocks llor other non-sonorous material, which is preterably the same or similar material to that with which the street is paved. Said blocks lie at their tops` 'flush with the top ol*l the lranie and 'make therewith a comparatively smooth surface over which the vehicle-wheels may run. At suitable points through the body oit wood are arranged Ventilating' tubes or pipes '1 7 1,7, which are preferably flanged at the top and extend downwarc through perlorations inthe bottom plate. The last said perforations are l'n'e'lerably larger than the tubes or pipes to prevent a contact oli said tubes with the bottom plate and the production of noi` The flanges at the top ol the ventilating-tube rest on the liller of wood or other material less sonorous than that ol the lrame l0, and as the said liller wears away the said flanges sink into the lillcr, the lower ends'ol" the tube sinking' correspmidiugly through the portorations ol the sheet-metal plate. Said tubes may serve to receive the bars, hooks, or other devices employed in raising' the cover lrom the manhole, although l prc'ler to recess or notch the peripheral Ilang'e ll, as shown at 18,11() facilitate such raising'` lVheu employ ing' a liller in the chamber oi the dishsshaped receptacle ol concrete or other plastic and non-souorous material, l prefer to employ in addition to the tubes, il: such are employed, one or more tl-shaped bolts ll), (shown in llin'. 3,) the threaded ends ol" which extend downward through the bottom plate and are fastened by nuts 2l), or said ends may be held TOO by upsetting the same or by any other suitable means. Into the chamber or receptacle thus furnished the plastic matter may be pressed, so as to surround the bolt and be held thereby securely in place.
I am aware that various modifications other than those described may be made in the construction oi' my cover without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I do not wish to be limited by the positive descriptive terms employed above, excepting as the state of the art may require.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The improved manhole-cover, comprising a frame outwardly iianged at the top and y inwardly flanged at the bottom, a perforated sheet-metal plate seated on the inward flange, a liller of material less sonorous than that oi' said frame, and a series of tubes which extend both through said filler and the perforated sheet-metal plate, substantially as set forth.
2. The improved manhole-cover, comprising a frame outwardly anged at the top and inwardly iianged at the bottom, a perforated sheet-metal plate seated on the inward ange, a filler of material less sonorous than that of said frame, and a series of tubes which eX- tend both through said liller and perforated sheet-metal plate, said tubes being flanged at the top, the iianges resting on said liller, substantially as set forth.'
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of May, 1903.
