Be it known that LWALTnn .losur'n TURN- BULL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Stilt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in walking-stilts, an object being to provide a stilt with a foot-block so arranged as to be adjusted along the stilt-staii' for any desired height and rigidly held as adjusted.

I will describe a stilt embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures:

Figure l is a side elevation of a stilt cmbod ying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the stilt-staff, which may be made round or of any other desired shape. Movable along one side of the staff is a foot-block 6, which at its edge adjacent to the staff is channeled vertically to conform substantially to the cross-section of the stali. As clearly shown in Fig. 2, this portion of the block is thickened, and the outer surfaces of this thickened portion are inclined outward, as indicated at 7. The block is provided with a transverse outwardly-opening slot 8, which at its end Within the block is curved upward, as indicated in Fig. 1. Removabl y engaging in this slot is a link 9, which is substantially ovate in form, so as to engage around the stall and also at its lesser diameter engage with the inclined portions 7 of the toot-block. By this arrangementthe block is held firmly from lateral movement or movement around the staff. The link is designed to engage with any one of a series of lugs 10, arranged on the sides of the stafl opposite the foot-block. These lugs are curved upward or are of hooked form, and n'elerably the several lugs will be cast integral with a strip 11, seated in a channel formed in the staff and secured by any suitable means. As here shown, the strip is secured by means oi screws 12.

As the parts are arranged in Fig. 1 the stilt is in condition For use.- Should it be desired to raise or lower the foot-block, it is to be slightly moved upward along the stafl', so that the link may be moved into the horizontallydisposed portion of the slot 8, permitting the said link to be released l roma lug and moved into engagement with another. Then by releasing thefoot-block it will drop by gravity and the link will engage in the upper end wall of said slot, the link being at a down ward incline, and thus holding the block tightly clamped against the staff.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 5 A stilt comprising a stall, a series of lugs arranged on one side thereof, a toot-block having its edge adjacent to the stalf and provided with a channel conforming to the contour of the stafl, the block at the said channeled por- 7 tion being thickened, the outer surfaces oi said thickened portion being beveled, the said block having a transverse outwardly-opening slot formed in it, and a substantially ovate link for engaging in said slot and with any one of the lugs and also adapted to engage against said side inclines oi the block.
