PATENT UFFMJE.
EPHRAIM BASS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ORNAMENTAL BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,396, dated February 21, 1905.
Application filed December 16, 1904. $erial No. 237,070.
To all 11/71/0772 it flea/y concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM BASS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city. county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Buckles and Similar Devices, of which the following is a true and concise speciiication.
This invention relates to ornamental buckles and similar devices, and more particularly to constructional formations of buckles, clasps, &c., whereby they are caused to simu late more elaborate ornaments.
The invention will be more readily understood from the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a buckle embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof on line 2 2.
The buckle herein shown is one of the purely ornamental type formed simply as a frame, with side bars (6 a and cross-bar b and adapted to contain a belt or band A, passed under the side bars and over the cross-bar in the usual manner; but it is to be understood that this invention may be applied to buckles involving fastening means as well as to other similar kinds of devices. Heretofore it has been the custom to ornament that portion of the belt or band which is exposed between or adjacent the side bars a by means of buttons or other ornaments sewed to the belt in rows parallel with the said side bars or otherwise properly related to them. This operation requires that the buttons be sewed upon the belt prior to its insertion into and attachment to the buckle and entails a great amount of l labor in the measurement and attachment of the buttons and the placing of the belt within the buckle.
The object of the present invention is the production of a highly ornamental device to give the same effect as the prior construction above mentioned, with great saving in the cost of manufacture. To this end the side bars a of the buckle or clasp are formed with a series of projections c, which have comparatively large heads and slim necks, the heads being fashioned in the shape of buttons or other ornaments and disposed so close to the side bars as that the necks or connections between heads and bars are concealed from view or rendered at least inconspicuous, in this manner giving the heads the appearance of being attached to the belt. The buckle and the heads are most conveniently made of a single piece of material. When the belt has been inserted within the buckle, as above described, it may be secured in place by means of an attachment-strip d or other usual means, disposed on the reverse side thereof. The assembled device has every appearance of being formed with separate attached buttons, and it is more durable and more ornamental than such a construction. I
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, an ornamental buckle comprising side bars adapted for attachment to a belt or band and formed with a plurality of projections extended inwardly from said side bars and adapted to overlie the adjacent portion of the said band, said projections having comparatively large heads and relatively slim necks disposed so close to a side bar as to render their necks inconspicuous and thereby simulate buttons attached to the band, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to the specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EPHRAIM BASS.
