IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF HOES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownthat I, L. T. RIOIlARDSON, of Olayville, in the county of Oneida, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Hoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make andusc the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of the agricultural implement called the hoe, having more particular reference to the first stages of the process, whereby. the operation of finishing the hoe is greatly facilitated, and much time and labor saved;
And the invention consists in forming the blank or pattern, as it is cut from the cast-steel bar, with the shank or neck dropped below the ears of the hoe.
Figure 1 represents a blank of cast steel, prepared in the ordinary manner.
Figure 2 represents the blank formed according to my invention, with the neck dropped.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the blank, from which the blade of the bee is to be drawn or rolled.
B is the shank or neck. 7
On fig. 1, the first operation to be performed is to spread it, either by the hammer or by rolling, to get the width of the blade.
The next is to bring up a portion of the stock for forming the ears.
This is done from the parts marked C O, on each side of the neck B.
This has hitherto been the most difficult operation in forming the hoe, and therefore there have been rolls prepared at great expense for this especial purpo'se.
Now, my improvement consists in settingin the stock or blank each side of the neck, before rolling or hammering for spreading the blade, as seen in fig. 2 at (212.
By thus dropping the 'neck 13, or, what is the same thing, forming the cavities 0? cl, the most of the expensive rolls are dispensed with, while the hoe is made more uniform, and the process greatly facilitated.
As the forming of the blanks or patterns, as seen in fig. 1, has hitherto been a distinct and separate opcration in hoe-making, which involved many diificulties and inconveniences in finishing up the blade, I have endeavored by experiment to devise some method by which those diiliculties can be avoided, and have discovered that by forming the blank or pattern with the cavities (Z d, as represented in fig. 2, I have succeeded in my object. Improvement like this, in an implement in such universal demand as the hoe, which not only facilitates the manufacture and improves'the article, but eheapens it to the consumer, can only be considered as a public benefit. I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent The cavities or recesses cl d, in the blank or pattern of the hoe, in the process of manufacture, substantially as and for the purposes described.
L. T. RICHARDSON.
