LEWVIS A. FOOTE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHICAGO CAR SEAL AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A
CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
MILK-BOTTLE SEAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,256, dated February 21, 1905,
Application filed July 1, 1904. Serial No. 214.915.
1"!) (LZZ whont it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Lewis A. Foo'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at 108 North Green street, Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful vlmprovementin Milk-Bottle Seals, of which the following is, a specification.
My invention relates particularly to seals for use in connection with milk-bottles which are ordinarily closed by means of a paper disk; and myprimary object is to provide a seal of the character indicated, which will not only serve as a means for securing the bottle against tampering, but also one which will serve to prevent impurities from entering the bottle and'to prevent breakage or chipping of the bottle.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a broken sectional view of a milk-bottle equipped with my improved seal; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the seal, and Fig. 3 a broken horizontal section illustrating the manner in which the shackle of the seal is connected with the neck of the bottle.
In Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, A represents a milk-bottle provided externally at its upper end with the usual flange or enlargement a and internally with an annular shoulder a; B, the usual cardboard disk employed for closing the bottle, the same resting upon the shoulder 6/, and C my improved seal applied to the bottle. The seal in this form comprises, preferably, a metallic disk 0, having its central portion struck down, as indicated at c, and a curved flange c conforming to the curvature of the upper portion of the enlargement (0 of the bottle and equipped with depending ears 0 As thus described the member 0 has an annular raised portion 0, which snugly receives that portion of the top of the bottle that lies above the shoulder a. Each ear 0 is incised along lines parallel with its edges and has its central portion c struck upwardly and the flanking portions struck inwardly, affording circumferential channels for the shackle clwhich, preferably, is of wire. One end of the shackle 0 is secured to a sealingblock 0 and the other end passes through a longitudinal perforation in the sealing-block,
being threaded through from the inner end of the block.
In the sealing operation the member 0 is applied as shown in Fig. 1, the shackle is drawn closely about the neck of the bottle beneath the enlargement a, as shown in Fig. 1, and the sealing-block is then compressed, as shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted that the central portion of the member 0 bears firmly upon the disk and that the curved flange c' closely envelops theupper end of the bottle, so that if any water is dropped upon the bottle it will not pass into same. Moreover, the exposed surfaces are round and the seal [its snugly, so that bottles maybe closely packed and placed upon the top of each other without injury. It is also an important consideration that my improved device serves to prevent chipping of the bottles at the tops thereof, thereby effecting a saving which to a single dealer may amount to many dollars every day.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a bottle having an internal shoulder at its upper end, a disk upon said shoulder, and a seal comprising a disk having its central portion bearing upon said first-named disk and provided with a curved flange fitting snugly over the upper end of the bottle, ears depending from said flange, a shackle connected with said ears and binding said second-named disk to the bottle, and a sealing block secured to the ends of said shackle, for the purpose set forth.
2. A seal for milk-bottles comprising a disk havingits central portion struck downwardly and provided near its margin with a struckup annular portion, affording a curved flange, ears depending from said flange and having struck-out portions affording circumferential channels, a shackle extending through said channels, and a sealing-block into which the extremities of the shackle pass in the same direction, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
