Be it known that I, ORRIN CHALFANT PAINTER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Baltimore,Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labels for Bottles and other Receptacles, of which the following is a Specification.

My invention relates to labels for bottles and other receptacles; and it consists of a combined labeland folder and of details of construction connected therewith, all as hereinafter more fully and exactly set forth.

It is common practice in preparing bottles, jars, jugs, metallic cans, barrels, boxes, carboys, or other receptacles for the market, in addition to labels permanently affixed to the bottles or receptacles,to loosely wrap them with advertising matter, testimonials, &c., or Where the bottle or receptacle is inclosed in a paper box or carton or other similar covering to inclose therein with the bottle or receptacle the said advertising matter. In such cases the said advertising matter is so far independent of the bottle or receptacle as to be often neglected, unnoticed, or lost and its advertising value minimized.

It is the object of this invention to insure closer attention to such advertising matter,-

testimonials, &c., by attaching them with the label proper or as a part thereof to the bottle or receptacle, whereby the advertising value of such printed matter may be enhanced. To this end I provide a folder containing advertising matter, (or any matter relating to the label or article labeled, hereinafter called for convenience advertising matter,) which in some cases may be continuous with the label proper and in others merely confined thereunder by the label itself. In either case the advertising matter is released to view by rupture on a line of holes or perforations or by a tearing wire or string located at the properline in a well-known Way at one edge of the outer cover or label proper.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents an outside view of the combined label and folder not applied to the bottle. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of Fig. 1 opened. Fig. 3 shows the same on the bottle. Fig. 4. shows a modified form of the folder and label in similar view to Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of Fig. 4 opened. Fig. 6 is a view of the same closed. Fig. 7 shows the body of a bottle in elevation with the label and folder of Figs. 4, 5, and 6 at tached, the outer label appearing. Fig. 8 shows the same with outer label and folder removed, displaying the inner label fixed directly to the bottle. Fig. 9 represents a modified form of label. Fig. 10 shows a modification of my label in which a wire or string is used in place of the perforations. Fig. 11 is a detail View of another modification.

Fig. 1 shows an adaptation of the folder to a bottle in which the label proper, 2, forms the outside covering and is continuous with the folder- leaves 3, 4, and 5 of advertising mat ter lying thereunder, the inner leaf 3 being wholly pasted or otherwise secured to the bottle or receptacle, the perforated edge 1 only of the outer leaf 2 or label proper being similarly secured to the bottle up to the central line of the perforations only, so that by rupturing along the line of perforations 1 the folder is released for inspection. Fig. 3 represents this label attached to a bottle.

Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show a form of the folder in which the inner and outer leaves 2 and 3 only are continuous with each other, the intervening leaves 4 and 5 being held. in place by the cover or label proper until ruptured along the line of perforations 1. As shown in Fig. 6, this form of the device is provided with a flap 7 on the edge of the outer leaf. Fig. 6 indicates that this flap is folded under the inner leaf and is pasted to the bottle, so that rupturing along the line of perforations l or by means of an embedded wire or string on the same line leaves this strip attached to the bottle. This form of folder-label is shown in Fig. 7 complete attached to the bottle, the outer leaf or label appearing in this figure. Fig. 8 represents this same form of the invention, but with the outer leaf or label removed and with only the inner leaf or label remaining, this being, as before stated,wholly pasted to the bottle. In all or any of these cases the inner leaf 3 or 8' is wholly pasted upon the bottle, and where necessary the printed matter on this leaf may be a duplicate of the outer leaf or label proper, so that if the whole of the advertising matter is torn olf the bottle will be labeled the same as before rupture of the outer edge or label proper.

In Fig. 9 I show a modification of the device in which the outer leaf or label is provided along its upper and lower edges with flaps 8 and 9, these being adapted to provide a pocket or receptacle for containing loosely a sheet or sheets having directions or advertizing matter thereon. This form of folder or label has the outer leaf 2 and the inner leaf 3 and a flap 7, similar to the leaves and flap shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6. By this construction loose leaves or a loose folder may be securely held between the inner and outer leaves of the folder.

In Fig.'1 0 I show a means of opening the folder other than by a row of perforations, the same consisting of the string or wire 10.

Instead of forming the folder with holes to facilitate its rupture-along a given line or instead of providing the folder with a string or wire by which it may be opened I provide, as shown in Fig. 11, a series of tongues 1 projecting from the front leaf of the folder and pasted onto the bottle. To open this folder, it is severed at the junction of the tongues with the edge of the front leaf.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A label for bottles or other receptacles comprising a folder having an inner and an outer leaf, a leaf or leaves inclosed between them and containing advertising or other printed matter, the said folder being adapted for attachment to the receptacle or bottle and the intermediate leaf or leaves being exposed by rupturing the outer leaf, substantially as described.

2. A label for bottles or other receptacles comprising a folder having an inner and an outer leaf, a leaf or leaves inclosed between them and containing advertising or other printed matter, the said folder being adapted for attachment to the bottle or receptacle, the said intermediate leaf or leaves being continuous with the inner leaf and being exposed by rupturing the outer leaf, substantially as described.

3. In combination with a bottle or other receptacle, a label consisting of a sheet of material folded to provide a leaf which is attached to the bottle and an outer leaf, said leaves or folds having between them a leaf containing advertising or other printed matter, the said outer leaf being attached at its free edge and having means whereby it may be ruptured along a 'certain line, substantially as described.
