BAYONNE, NEWV JERSEY.
AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 783,214, dated February 21, 1905.
Application filed September 1 1'0 (Ll/l, whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRANK B. Mn'rzeaa, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Amusement Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to amusement devices of the class known as shadowgraphs, by which the image of animals may be cast on a wall, screen, or other receiver by means of the aid of an artificial light; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive and which is designed to amuse both old and young.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, in which Figure 1 is a view of one side of my improved shadowgraph and showing the method of operating the same; Fig. 2, a view of one side of a detail thereof, and Fig. 3 a View of the reverse side of the shadowgraph shown in Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a plate or board a, which is composed of cardboard or any other suitable thin material and provided with a central opening a which is preferably circular in form and into which from one side thereof projects a radially-arranged member 6, the front side of which is printed or painted to represent the human hands, said hands and the fingers and thumbs thereof being in the position to form the shadow or representation of the head of a hound, in which position the thumbs 6 represent the ears, the central part b of one hand the head of the hound, and the third and fourth fingers b" and b the upper jaw, which is designated as a whole by the reference character b.
Pivoted to the back of the plate or board a at 0 is an elbow-shaped member (Z, provided wit an arm (Z and a shank (Z which shank 2,1903. Serial No. 172.864.
passes through a slot 0 in the plate or board a and is provided with a thumb or finger piece d, while the arm (Z projects forwardly and is provided with two fingers (Z and d. A keeper f is also preferably secured to the back of the plate or board or to the head member bthereof, through which the arm 6Z2 passes, and in the position of the parts shown in Fig. 1 the finger d forms the lower jaw of the head of the hound and the finger d is concealed; but in the position of the parts shown in Fig. 3 the finger cl forms the tongue of the hound.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings I have shown at g an artificial light and have indicated at it a wall, screen, or other receiver' on which an image may be thrown, and in practice the plate or board a is held, as shown in Fig. 1, between the light and the wall or screen, and in the position of the parts shown in Fig. 1 the image of the head of the hound will be thrown on the wall or screen, as shown by the shade or shaded lines 2', and in order to show the mouth of the hound open and the tongue the thumb or finger is placed on the piece cZ of the movable member d and the fingers (Z and d are depressed, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 3 and in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Any other animal or the image thereof may be produced in'the same manner, all that is necessary being to change the form of the part b and the movable part d. If it is desired to illustrate or produce the image of an elephant or an elephants head, the main part 7) within the opening a will be so formed as to represent the head of an elephant, while the movable part (Z will be formed to represent the trunk. If it is desired to represent or form the image of the head of a mule, corresponding changes will be made in the part I), while the part cl will be formed to represent the ears, and in this manner the image or representation of any desired animal maybe cast upon a wall, screen, or other receiver in the manner herein described.
In practice the front side of the plate or board a is preferably provided with pictures of various animals, as shown in Fig. 1; but this is immaterial and forms no part of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters member with a thumb and finger piece which Patent, is projects therethrough, and whereby said movr I A device of the class described, comprising able member may be operated, substantially 5; a plate or board having a large central openas shown and described. 5 ing and with one side of which is connected In testimony that I claim the foregoing as a stationary member which projects into said my invention I have signed my name, in presopening and is shaped to represent part of an ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 11th animal, and a movable member pivoted to the day of September, 1903.
back of said plate or board and representing FRANK B. METZGER. 10 another part of said animal and also project- Witnesses:
ing into said opening, said plate or board be- F. A. STEWART,
ing provided with a slot and said movable C. J. KLEIN.
