Be it known that I SIMON VVREATON BEN- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Metal W indow-Screen, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to window-screens, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character in which the edges of the open-work fabric will be firmly but detachably connected to the screen-frame, thus permitting of the adjustment of the fabric from time to time to maintain the same taut, one in which the hangers may be adjusted as circumstances require and one wherein-an adjustable filling plate or member is provided for closing the lateral space between the screen and sash frame.
The invention has for a further object to provide a simple effective lock carried by the screen for maintaining the latter in closed position.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a screen embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the lock, showing the parts thereof disconnected. Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that my improved frame comprises a top rail 1, abottom rail 2, and side stiles 3, which parts when assembled receive and support a sheet of open-work or reticulated material 1, preferably of Wire-gauze, as usual. The bars or members of the screen-frame are preferably composed from galvanized sheet metal, and each comprises, as seen more clearly in Fig. 3, a front plate or cap 5 and a rear plate or back 6. The outer plate 5 is provided at its inner edge with an inturned double-folded flange 7, while the plate 6, which is of substantially U shape in cross-section, has at its inner edge an inturned flange 8, the edge of flange 9, the edge of which bears also upon the inner face of plate 5 and terminates in a marginal outturned flange 10, around which the outer portion or edge of the cap-plate 5 is folded, thereby producing upon the rail or bar a stiff outstanding flange, which is united at its ends by rivets or other fastening devices 11, with the ends of the similar flanges upon the adjacent frame bars or members, whereby these united flanges form conjointly around the sides and bottom of the screen-frame a marginal outstanding flange. The stiles and rails are further united by means of end rivets 11, which serve particularly as a means for connecting the top rails to the adjacent ends of the stiles.
As seen in Fig. 5, the formation of the upper rail 5 is identical with that just described except that in this connection the marginal outturned flange 10 is omitted from the inturned flange 9 of the rear plate 6 and that the outer portion of the plate 5 is folded directly downward upon the flange 9, and thus projects normally horizontally in rear of the screen-frame, to thus constitute the relatively fixed primary portion or section 12 of an adjustable filling plate or member 13, the secondary adjustable portion or section let of which is suitably slotted transversely, as at 15, and is attached to the section 12 by suitable fastening devices 16, preferably in the form of belts or rivets, engaging through said slots, and thereby permitting adjustment of the section let for varying the width of the filling member. For further connecting the sections of the filling member I have folded the ends of the primary section 12 backward upon the ends of the section 14:, as seen at 17, these folded portions also constituting guides for the section 14 in its movements.
The flanges 7 and 8, carried, respectively, by the front and rear plates of the frame-bar, conjointly form between them and around the inner margin of the screen-frame recesses or seats 18, designed to receive the adjacent edges I 24, upon which is seated, at the rear face of I of the fabric 4, which is maintained in place in said seats by means of retaining members or keys 19, preferably in the form of strips of sheet metal inserted edgewise to position and bearing at their inner edges upon the fabric. These keys, which are freely removable to permit releasing of the edges of the v fabric for purposes of stretching the latter,
are secured in place in the following manner: The keys, which lie along the edges of the stiles and rails, are engaged upon their outer edges by sheet-metal turn-buttons 19, secured in place, as seen in Fig. 6, by the fastening devices 20, which secure together the plates composing the stiles and rails, these buttons being arranged at suitable intervals throughout the length of the latter, while the keys extending along the top and bottom rails may have their ends inserted beneath the adjacent edges of the rear plates of the stiles, as illus' trated in Fig. 1, to thus obviate the necessity of buttons adjacent to the ends of said keys. Under this arrangement the keys may be readily released and withdrawn for the purpose above mentioned.
Carried at the upper ends of the marginal outstanding flanges upon the stiles 3 and at the upper ends of the latter are hangers 21, preferably in the form of U-shaped wire members seated between the inwardly-folded portions of the plates 5 and the adjacent flanges 10 on the plates 6, these hangers, the crown portion of which project above the ends of the flanges, being adjustably held in place by means of the fastening devices 11 in the form of screw-bolts having nuts, which in practice may be loosened to permit the longitudinal adjustment of thehangers and again tightened for fixing the latter in their adjusted positions. These hangers are adapted for detachable engagement with engaging members or hooks 22,, attached in any appropriate manner to window-sash frame 23.
Attention is here directed to the fact that in practice when the screen is seated in the sash-frame the outstanding marginal flange will bear upon the adjacent face of the blindstop, the outer portion or edge of which fits snugly into the angle of the screen-fral'ne, thereby imparting a neat finished appearance and at the same time preventing looseness of the screen within the sash-frame and the passage of insects between the meeting edges of the parts. Furthermore, the filling-plate or member 13 will bear at its inner edge upon the adjacent member of the window-sash to thus prevent the passage of insects and to ob viate looseness and rattling of the same, the filling-plate being adjustable for the purposes heretofore mentioned.
The locking device 20 is removably attached to the bottom rail 2 or other desired part of the screen-frame by means of a through-bolt the. bar, a shouldered bearing member or washer 25, the reduced neck 26 of which constitutes a direct bearing for the pivoted latching member 27, the latter being retained in place by a nut tapped onto the end of the through-bolt. The member 27, which is composed from sheet metal suitably bent to shape, is adapted when in locked position to engage with a member or catch 28, attached to the window-frame, the latch 27 being provided with an inturned flange having an inclined cam-face 29, which acts as the latch moves into engagement with the catch to draw the screen-frame tightly inward upon the sashframe.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device which is admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood, however, that minor changes may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. The combination with a screen-frame including a bar composed of a cap and a back, one of said parts having a flange folded around the marginal face of the other part to form a seat, of a fabric having a portion thereof arranged in said seat, and a retaining member disposed in the seat upon the fabric.
2. The combination with a screen-frame including a bar composed of a cap and a back and provided with a seat of a fabric having a portion thereof arranged in the seat, a removable retaining member disposed in the seat upon the fabric, a turn-button carried by the frame and adapted for engagement with the retaining member to secure the latter in place, and a fastening device connecting the component parts of the bar and securing the turnbutton in place.
3. The combination with a screen-frame including sheet-metal stiles composed of inner and outer plates, the outer portion of one of said plates being folded around the other, hangers disposed beneath the folded portion of the plates, and fastening devices connecting the plates and securing the hangers in position.

The combination with a screen-frame including a sheet-metal bar composed of an inner and an outer plate, a portion of one of the plates being folded around the other plate, of a hanger seated beneath the folded portion of the plate, and a fastening device connecting the plates and securing the hanger in position.
5. The combination with a screen-frame including a sheet-metalbar composed of an inner and an outer plate, a portion of one of the plates being folded around the other, of an adjustable hanger seated beneath the folded meeting the plates and securing the hangers in position, said devices being operable for permitting adjustment of the hangers.
