UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHALKLEY B. BALDIVIN AND \VALTER J. TREMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PEJNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO S. \V. EVANS 8: SON, OF PHILADELPHIA,
PENNSYLVANIA.
GEAT FOR UIVIBRELLAS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,212, dated February 14, 1905.
Application filed September 28, 1904. Serial No. 226,343.
To (LU whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, (JHA LKLEYB. BALDWIN and \VALTER J. TREMAN, citizens of the United States, residingin the city and county o'fPhiladelphia, State ofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful (.ieat for Umbrellas, of which the following is a'specification.
Our invention consists of a geat for an umbrella composed of a band which is adapted to embrace an umbrella-rib and ears on said band adapted to have a stretcher mounted thereon, said ears being adapted to occupy the channel of the rib.
Figure 1 represents a face view of a blank from which a geat embodying our invention is constructed. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the geat as primarily applied to an umbrella-rib. Fig. 3 represents a view of the same at a right angle to Fig. 2. Fig. A represents a side elevation of the geat in operative position. Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 6 represents a transverse section on line :r .r, Fig. 5.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a geat which tightly embraces the rib B of an umbrella and has ears U projecting longitudinally therefrom, the same having eyes or openings D therein to receive the pivot E, which connects the stretcher F with the geat and forms the axis thereof. it being noticed that the said ears are located mainly within the channelof the ribs, as most plainly shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
In manufacturing the geat we form the blank shown in Fig. 1, the same consisting of the plate Ur and the perforated projections H, which extend from one end thereof obliquely or toward each other, said projections being subsequently converted into the ears C. The
plate is then bent and applied toa rib so as to embrace the same. forming the body of the geat, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, where,'as it will be seen, while the end portions of the geat are within the channel of the rib the projections H are brought toward each other,
and their sides are guarded by the flanges of the ribs, so as to be protected in lateral direction.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
1. An umbrella-goat composed of a body and a stretcher attaching ear thereon integral therewith and a channeled rib around the exterior of which said body is placed and in the interior of which said ear is contained.
2. An umbrella-goat composed of a body and a longitudinally-projecting car at an end thereon and a channeled rib with which said body is connected having said ear occupying the channel of said rib.
3. An umbrella-gcat composed of a body adapted to embrace an u mbrella-rib and an ear integral with said body projecting longitudinally therefrom and adapted for connecting a stretcher with the rib.
4:. An umbrella-goat composed of a body and an ear thereon integral therewith, said ear extending in the longitudinal direction of the body.
5. An umbrella-goat composed of a body adapted to embrace an umbrella-rib, and an ear integral with said body extending longitudinally from said body and occupying the channel of said rib.
