Be it known that LFREDERICK EMIL Knnrr, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Inking Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, this being a division of the application for Letters Patent of the United States for a multicolor-printing press, Serial No. 156,0 3, iiled by me May 7, 1903.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved inking apparatus arranged to insure an even and uniform distribution of the ink or color to permit of feeding more or less ink or color to the printingcylinder for making a lighter or heavier impression.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure .l is a side elevation of part of a multicolor-printing press on which the improvement is applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. i is a sectional plan view of the same on the line st ii: of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the scraper for a leveling-roller, the section being on the line 6 6 of Fig. 7; and Fig. 7 is a transverse section of the same on the line 7 T of Fig. 6.
The inking apparatus is shown applied to a multicolor-printing press,mounted on a frame A, in which is journalcd an impression-cylinder C, around which passes a web D and around which are also grouped printing-cylinders (jr, (eight in number,) as shown in Fig. 1, each having clamped or otherwise secured on its peripheral face the printing-plates or type of the matter to be printed in a desired color or colors upon the web D. The printing-cylinders rotate in unison with the impression-cylinder C, and each printing-cylinder G is normally in contact with the web D and in peripheral contact with spaced inkingrollors H H. a transferring-roller H and leveling-rollers H H; the said rollers H, H, and H being also in contact with a central distributing-roller 1, mounted to turn in a fountain casing or trough J, secured to the sides of the frame A. The transferring-roller H" is located between the inking-rollers H and H, and the leveling-roller H is arranged above the inking-roller H, and the levelingroller H is placed below the inking-roller H. The lower portion of the peripheral face of the central distributing-roller l is engaged by a plurality of feed-rollers K, extending into the ink or color contained in the fountaincasing J, and the said feed-rollers K are journaled in a swing-frame L, fulcrumed loosely on the shaft 1 of the distributing-roller 1. The swing-frame L is provided with levers N, extending downwardly through suitable slots J in the cover J of the casing, and the said levers N are provided with locking-levers N, engaging notched segments N, held on the casing to lock the said levers N and swingframe L in a desired position. Now by the operator manipulating the levers N a swinging motion can be given to the swing-frame L, so as to keep all or only a few of the feedrollers K in the ink or color contained in the fountain-casing J to permit of feeding more or less ink to the distributing-roller l, which in turn delivers the ink to the inking-rollers H H and the transferring-roller H all in contact with the peripheral face of the printing-cylinder G.
The inking-rollers H H, the transferringroller H and the leveling-rollers H H are geared with the gear-wheel E" on the printing-cylinder (t, and the said inking-rollers H H and the transferring-roller H are geared with a gear-wheel l on the distributing-roller I, so that all the rollers I, H, H, H, H", and H and the printingcylinder Gr rotate in unison. (See Fig. a.)
Each of the leveling-rollers H and H is provided with a scraping device H see Figs. 2, 6, and 7) to allow more or less color or ink on the type or plate on the periphery of the printing-cylinder G to print heavier or lighter at any desired part in the width of the web D. For this purpose each scraper H (see Figs. 2, 6, and 7) is provided with a casing H, se-
cured to the casing J and having a slotted bottom through which extend scraper-sections H mounted on springs H and adjusted nearer to or farther from the peripheral face of the corresponding leveling-roller H or H by setscrews H A scraper edge H in more or less contact with the roller H or H* is of rubber, leather, or other flexible material. Now by the arrangement described any one of the scraper-sections H may be adjusted independent of the other sections to scrape off more or less ink or color from the leveling-roller H or H*, and as the leveling-roller is in contact with the type or printing-plate on the printing-cylinder G more or less ink or color is taken up by this leveling-roller from the type or plate to insure a heavier or lighter impression on the web for any desired part throughout its width. By having a plurality of rollers H, H, and H for delivering ink or color to the printing-cylinder an even and uniform distribution of the ink or color takes place. Access is had to the scraping devices H by suitable doors J in the top and bottom of the casing J.
The casing J is provided at its sides with grooved lugs J engaging longitudinally-extending dovetailed bars J attached by screws J to the inner faces of the sides of the main frame A, and the said screws extend through elongated slots in the sides of the frame A to allow convenient longitudinal adjustment of the fountain-casing J to bring the inking device and also the rollers H, H, H H", and H in proper relation to the printing-cylinder G.
Each printing-cylinder G is mounted to be moved in or out of contact with the web D and the inking-rollers, and thus when the printing-cylinder G is out of contact with the web'and the inking-rollers the operator is enabled to quickly adjust the web and then bring the printing-cylinder G back into position, so as to insure a proper impression of the printing-cylinder on the web held on the impression-cylinder. The means for shifting the printing-cylinder G, as described, is more fully set forth in the application above referred to and in a separate application filed herewith, so that a detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary; but it is understood that by the arrangement described any one of the inking devices can be readily rendered inactive whenever desired by swinging the corresponding printing-cylinder G into an outermost or inactive position relative to the web and the rollers H, H, H H and H*.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A multicolor-printing press provided with a printing-cylinder, an inking device for the same, consisting of an ink-distributing roller, ink-feed rollers for the same, means for adjusting the ink-rollers to permit more or less ink to be fed to the distributing-roller, and a plurality of inking-rollers in peripheral contact with the printing-cylinder and the said distributing-roller, as set forth.
2. A multicolorprinting press provided with a printing-cylinder, an inking device for the same, consisting of an ink-distributing roller, ink-feed rollers for the same, a plurality of inking-rollers in peripheral contact with the printing-cylinder and the said distributing-roller, and means for removing the ink from the printing-cylinder to permit a lighter or heavier impression to be made on any part of the web throughout its width, as set forth.
3. A multicolorprinting press provided with a printing-cylinder, an inking device for the same, consisting of an ink-distributing roller, ink-feed rollers for the same, a plurality of inking-rollers in peripheral contact with the printing-cylinder and the said distributing-roller, and leveling-rollers in peripheral contact with the printing-cylinder and arranged adjacent to the inking-rollers, each leveling-roller being provided with a scraping device, as set forth.
4:. A multicolor-printing press provided with a printing-cylinder, an inking device for the same, consisting of an ink-distributing roller, ink-feed rollers for the same, a plularity of inking-rollers in peripheral contact with the printing-cylinder and the said distributing-roller, and leveling-rollers in peripheral contact with the printing-cylinder and arranged adjacent to the inking-rollers, each leveling-roller being provided with a scraping device, made in sections held adjustable independent one of the other, as set forth.
5. A multicolor-printing press provided with a printing cylinder, an inkingroller for the said cylinder, and a leveling-roller in peripheral contact with the said printing-cylinder and provided with a scraping device, as set forth.
6. A multicolor-printing press provided with a printingcylinder, an ink'ingroller for the said cylinder, and a leveling-roller in peripheral contact with the said printingcylinder and provided with a scraping device, made in sections, held independently adjustable one of the other, as set forth.
7. A multicolor-printing press provided with a printingcylinder, an inkingroller for the said cylinder, and a leveling-roller in peripheral contact with the said printingcylinder and provided with a scraping device, having a casing, scraper-sections held springpressed in the casing and screws for adjusting the said sections, as set forth.
8. A multicolor-printing press having an inking device for a printing-cylinder, comprising an ink-fountain, a central ink-distributing roller journaled in the fountain and in contact with the inking-roller, a plurality of ink-feed rollers in peripheral contact with the central ink-distributing roller and adapted to extend into the ink or color in the fountain, and a manually-controlled frame hung on the central distributing-r01ler and carrying the said ink-feed rollers, as set forth.
9. A multicolor-printing press having an inking device for a printing-cylinder, comprising an ink-fountain, a central distributing-roller journaled in the fountain and in contact with the inking-rollers, a plurality of ink-feed rollers in peripheral contact With the central distributing-roller and adapted to extend into the ink or color in the fountain. a manually-controlled frame hung on the central distributing-roller and carrying the said ink-feed rollers, and means for locking the said frame in position on the fountain, as set forth.
