RECORD OR ACCOUNT FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,164, dated February '7, 1905,
Application filed June 16,1902. Serial No. 111,807,
To rif/Z 'wh/0m, it nbr/y concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK O. MoELRoY, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Oolumbus, in the county of Franklin and State ot' Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Record or Account Files, ot' which the `following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of oiiice-tiles of that class in which sheets eontaining accounts or records of various characters are designed to be detachably bound between two rigid cover plates or backs; and the objects of my invention are to provide an improved tile and index of this character so arranged and constructed as to permit ot' the binding' between the saine back or cover plates two separated sets of bills or records which have relation to each other and to combine therewith index-sheets which shall be common to both sets of records or accounts. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure l is a view in perspective of one of my improved tiles, showing' the same open. Fig. 2v is a rear elevation ot' the same, and Fig. 3 is an end view.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
in carrying out my invention I employ the usual back or cover plates l and 2, the rear portions ot' which are adjustably connected in the well-known manner by locking pins or bolts 3, there being in the present instance one pair of these locking-pins arranged on each side of the center of the upper or outer back or cover plate l. As is common in this class otA tiles, the lower ends of the pins are secured in connection withthe rear portion of the lower cover-plate 2, while the upper portions ot' said pins pass loosely through openings in the rear portion oil the upper coverplate l and are adapted to be locked in connection with said upper cover-plate by a suitable locking device. (Not herein shown.) Each pair of the pins 3 passes through the rear portions ot' the sheets, forming' one set of reci l l ords, the two sets of record-sheets being' indicated at 4; and in the drawings. 'lheserecord or account sheets i and 5 are arranged on opposite sides ot' the center ot' the height of the covers, with a central space, such as that indicated at 6, existing' between the same. At intervals, however, l cause to be bound between corresponding leaves or sheets of both sets index-sheets 7, the latter being' otl such length or height as to extend across the space (5 and between the leaves or sheets of both sets. Each ot' these index-sheets is preferably provided with an outwardlyprojecting indeX- letter-containing tab, such as is indicated atS.
The advantages ot' the construction described will be apparent when it is understood that the sheets of one set, such as those indicated at 5, are intended for the purpose ot' keeping' thereon accounts ot' bills which have been paid, each sheet bearing the account oi' a single customer, while the sheets of the remaining set likewise contain the accounts ot' customers which are unpaid. rhen one of these latter accounts is paid, the sheet containing' the same is removed from its place in the unpaid account-sheets and inserted between the proper index-pages ot the paid set. This system admits of the keeping' oi' a complete iile for any given term ot' paid and unpaid accounts, which greatly facilitates the examination of either class oi' such accounts and admits of the ready insertion ot new accounts under the proper index-heading as these accounts occur.
Having now fully described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Ina device ot' the characterdescribed, the combination with cover-plates and binding means for adjustably connecting the same, ot' index-sheets, and detachable subindex-leaves arranged in separated set-s on opposite sides ot' the center ot' each index-sheet.
2. ln a device of the character described, the combination with cover-plates and binding' means for adjust-ably connecting the rear portions thereo t, ot' separated sets ot' paper leaves detacbably held between said cover-plates, and with all the posts and sets of opposed subinindex-sheets common to the sets arranged at dex-leaves, the leaves of eacb set detacliably bridging the space between the sets.
5 3. In a device of the character described, the combination with the cover-plates and the four binding-posts, of index-sheets engaged FRANK C. MCELROY.

intervals between the leaves of said sets and engaging two of the posts.
