Be it known that L Hnmmx \Vns'rmvo. a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of lowa, have invented certain new and useful 1m provements in Apparel-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

The objects of my invention are to provide a fastening device especially adapted for use in connection with apparel-leggings and so arranged that the wearer may by simply pulling upon a cord bring the overlapping sides of the legging together, and when together the legging w ill be firmly held by metal pins on one member entering metal eyelets on the other member. so that the strain upon the logging will be thrown entirely upon the metal parts instead of the cord, and, further, to provide a fastener of this kind in which the cord is protected from wear.

My invention consists in certain details in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fullyset forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a legging with my improved fastening device applied thereto, the legging being partly open; and Fig. 2 shows a transverse sectional view of the overlapping sides of the legging through one of the fastening devices.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 have used the reference-numeral 11) to indicate the body portion of the legging, which maybe made of woven fabric or anysuitable material and which is of the class of leggings having overlapping end portions at one side of the legging. At the bottom of the legging is a strap 11, having a buckle 12 to provide for holding the legging down. Attached to the inner face of the inner one of the overlapping 1 strip 13.

A head 17 is formed on the inner end of the pin and-secures the pin firmly to the said strip 1?). These pins are placed at regular intervals throughout the length of the legging. The enter one of the edges of the legging is provided with a series ofmetal eyelets 18. large enough toadmit the outerends of the pins and spaced on the legging as required to receive the projecting ends of the pins when the outer edge is placed in position overlapping the inner edge. 1 have also provided a flexible cover 19 to overlap the outer edge of the logging and to conceal and protect the fastening devices. This cover 19 is provided near the center of the legging with two small eyelets 20 near each other and also with two small eyelets 21 near each other near the top of the legging.

The numeral 22 indicates a cord having a knot 23 at one end. This cord is passed first through the eye in the end of the lower pin 15, then outwardly through the lower eyelet 18, then inwardly near the second eyelet 18, then through the second pin, and then outwardly through the second eyelet, and so on until the cord is passed through the eyelets 20, which eyelets are located between two of the pins 15. Then the cord is again passed through the next eyelet 18, above the eyelets 20, and so on until the top portion of the legging is reached. Then the cord is passed through the eyelets 21 near the top of the logging, and the upper end of the cord extends through the upper eyelet 18. The lower end of the flap 19 held in position by a strap 19, of the ordinary kind.

lnpractical use and assuming that my improved fastener is applied to a legging as shown and described the operator first separates the edges of the legging, as shown at the top of Fig. 1, whereupon the operator may pass his :foot through the legging. Then by pulling at the upper end of the cord draw the lower eyelet .18 along the doubled cord passed through it until said eyelet passes over the projecting end of the lower pin. Each eyelet 18 will in turn be drawn into position with its mating pin passed through it, and the cords will firmly hold the eyelets over the pins. Furthermore, the flap 1%) will be firmlv held against the ends of the pins 15, thus protecting the cord from wear and concealing the ent-ire cord and fastening devices, except between the pairs of eyelets 20 and 21. The cord may be knotted at the top, thus preventing it from being pulled downwardly and releasing the fastening device. In this way the wear upon the fastening devices will be thrown upon the metal pins and eyelets, and therefore the cord will be protected and will last a comparatively long time. By thus concealing and protecting the cord and fastening devices there will be no projecting parts to engage and wear out an overcoat or outer garment of the wearer which might be rubbed by the legging, and there are no projecting parts on the leggings to be caughtin underbrush through which the wearer may be passing.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is

1. The combination with an article of wearing-apparel having inner and outer overlying portions, of a number of pins passed through one of said overlying portions each pin formed with an eye, eyelets in the other overlying rsaoeo portion of the article designed to receive said pins, a flap overlapping said eyelets and formed with eyelets, and a cord passed through the eyes of the pins, between the overlying portion having a flap and the flap, said cord also passed through the eyelets in said flap.

2. An apparel-legging having inner and outer overlying portions at one side, a metal strip on the inner surface of the inner overlying portion, a protecting-strip covering the inner face of the metal strip, a number of metal pins riveted to the metal strip and projected through the inner overlying portion, the outer ends of the pins each formed with an eye, eyelets in the outer overlying portion, a flap secured to the outer surface of the outer overlying portion having a number of pairs of eyelets therein and a cord passed through the eye of each pin, between the outer overlying portion and the flap, and through the pairs of eyelets in the flap.
