PATENT OFFICE.
LEIVIS H. BULLARD, OF KALAMAZOG, MICHIGAN.
SOFA-BED OR BED-COUCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,999, dated February '7, 1905.
Application filed July 2,1904. Serial No. 215,159.
'1'!) u.// lr/mm if many concern:
Be it known that LLEwIs H. BULLARD,a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds or Bed- Couches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sofa-beds or bed-couches.
The objects of this invention are, first, to provide an improved sofa-bed or bed-couch which is comparatively light in weight, simple in structure, and attractive in appearance when adjusted either as a bed or as a sofa; second. to provide an improved sofa-bed or bed-couch which is easily set up or knocked down and when in the knockdown may be made into a comparatively compact package; third, to provide an improved sofa-bed or bedcouch which may be very quickly and easily adjusted either as a bed or as a sofa; fourth, to provide an improved bed-couch or sofabed which is very economical to produce and durable in use.
Further objects and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompan ying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in which- Figure I is an end elevation view of myimproved sofa-bed or bed-couch adjusted as a bed. Fig. Qisan end elevation viewof my improved sofa-bed or bed-couch adjusted as a sofa, the collapsed or folded position of the rear section of the bed-bottom beingindicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of my improved sofa-bed or bed-couch adjusted as a bed. Fig. 4: is a detail plan view of my improved sofa-bed or bed-couch adjusted as a sofa, the spring portion of the bedbottom being removed. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on a line corresponding to line 5 o of Fig. 3, showing the means for supporting the rear section of the bed-bottom when adjusted as a bed.
In the drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the end portions of my improved sofa-bed or bed-couch are made up of front sections A and rear sections A. These sections are hinged together so that the rear sections A may be swung inwardly, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, when the structure is adjusted as a sofa. The hinge connections for the end sections A Aare preferably those described in my application for Letters Patent filed November 2. 1903, Serial No. 179,559, and as they are illustrated and described in detail and claimed therein they will not be further described in this specification. The front section A is provided with suitable side rails c.
The bottom of my improved bed-couch consists of a front section B and a rear section B. These sections B and B are made up of end rails c and longitudinal rails 0. These rails are preferably made of angle-iron. Crosspieces c are provided for the longitudinal rails c. A bed-spring C, which is common to both the front and rear sections, is secured to the end rails. The front ends of the end rails of the rear section rest upon the rear ends of the end rails of the front section. A pair of links I) Z) are pivotally secured to the end rails of the front and rear bottom sections, respectively, and to each other, so that the rear section B may be swung up and down in adjusting the structure.
\Vhen adjusted as a bed, the end rails of the rear section B engage the hooks (a on the legs of the end sections A and are supported thereby. In adjusting for a sofa the rear bottom section B is swung upwardly and the end sections A are swung inwardly to support the same in its elevated position. hen the rear section B is swung up in adjusting as a sofa, it slides forwardly on the front scction B against the upwardly-projecting stops B. Downwardly-projecting standards 1),
adapted to rest on the top rails of the end sections A when in their closed position are provided. When adjusting for use as a sofa or couch, the rear section B of the bed-bottom slides forwardly on the forward section, as heretofore stated, so that the forward section is considerably narrowed, which is desirable when used as a sofa.
When it is desired to collapse the structure for purposes of transportation or storage, the rear section B of the bed-bottom may be folded over upon the front section, as is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, it only being necessary to accomplish this to lift the same over the stops B. The bed-bottom merely rests upon the side rails of the bed and is not secured thereto. The side rails e of the bed can then be removed and the parts are all in convenient form for packing or storing.
My improved sofa-bed or bed-couch is very simple and economical in structure and is also very convenient to adjust either as a bed or as a sofa. I have illustrated and described the same in the form preferred by me on account of the structural simplicity and economy, although I am aware that it is capable of considerable structural variation without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of the end portions formed in sections; suitable hinge connections therefor; a bottom consisting of front and rear sections made up of end rails connected by suitable longitudinal rails, the front ends of the end rails of the rear section overlapping and resting upon the end rails of the front section; links pivoted to the end rails of said front and rear bottom sections and to each other; an upwardly-projecting stop on the end rails of said front section; a downwardly-projecting standard on said rear bottom section adapted to rest on the rear end sections when adjusted as a sofa; and a spring common to both of said bed-bottom sections secured to the end rails thereof, for the purpose specified.
2. In a structure of the class described, the
rear bottom sections and to each other; an upwardly-projecting stop on the end rails of said front section; and a downwardly-projecting standard on said rear bottom section adapted to rest on the rear end sections when adjusted as a sofa, for the purpose specified.
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination of the end portions formed in sections; suitable hinge connections therefor; a bottom consisting of front and rear sections made up of end rails connected by suitable longitudinal rails, the front ends of the end rails of the rear section overlapping and resting upon the end rails of the front sections; links pivoted to the end rails of said front and rear bottom sections and to each other, an upwardly-projecting stop on the end rails of said front section; and a spring common to both of said bed-bottom sections secured to the end rails thereof, for the purpose specified.
t. In a structure of the class described, the combination of the end portions formed in sections; suitable hinge connections therefor; a bottom consisting of front and rear sections, made up of end rails connected by suitable longitudinal rails, the front ends of the end rails of the rear section overlapping and resting upon the end rails of the. front section; links pivoted to the end rails of said front and rear bottom sections and to each other; and an upwardly-projecting stop on the end rails of said front section, for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
