COMBINED HINGE AND LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,986, dated February '7', 1905.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK V. Annimen, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Hinge and Look, of which the following is a specification.
i\ly invention relates to an improvement in a combined hinge and lock, the object being more particularly to provide a device which is applicable for use in connection with transoms, whereby the transom may be adjusted at different angles with respect to its support and locked in such adjustment.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a detail view of a portion of a transom and its support with my improved hinge and lock applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through a portion of the transom looking toward the hinge and lock, the transom being shown in full lines in its closed position and in dotted lines in its open position at an angle to its support. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken in the plane of the line A A of Fig. 2 looking in the directions of the arrows. Fig. i is a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line B B of Fig. 2 looking downwardly. Fig. 5 is a detail face view of the plate which is permanently attached to the swinging part with the springactuated lockinglever in position thereon, and Fig. 6 is a detail face view of the plate which is permanently attached to the stationary part and also the spring actuated roller-disk which interlocks with the plate on the swinging part.
The swinging part is denoted by 1 and is herein represented as a transom. The supporting-frame for the transom is denoted by 2. A plate 3 is secured to the support 2 in its face adjacent to the sash of the transom, in i the present instance by means of screws 4, the said plate being countersunk into the support 2, so as to have the face of the plate flush with the face of the support. This plate 3 is provided with a recessed portion 5, within which is located a coil-spring 6. This recess 5 in the plate 3 is preferably cylindrical, and extending along adjacent to the edge of the recess 1 provide a series of lugs T, which project from the face of the plate 3 and form a series of notches 8 between them. A springactuated rotary disk 9 is mounted on the face of theplate 3 over the recess 5, which disk is provided with an inwardly-projectcd centrally-mranged pin 10, the end of which has a bearing in the bottom of the recess This disk is further provided with a pin 11, projected into the recess 5, to which pin one end of the coil-spring 6 is secured, the other end of which spring is secured to the inner wall of the recess This disk 9 is further provided with a centrallyarranged angular lug or projection 12, which is shown in the present instance as square in cross-section, for interlocking with the swinging part as, for instance, the transom. A plate 13 is permanently secured to the face of the swinging part opposite the plate 3, in the present instance by screws l-l, the said plate being countersunk into the said swinging part to bring its face flush with the face of the said part. The face of this plate 13 is cutaway, as shown at 15, for the reception therein of a portion of the disk 9, which projects away from the face of the plate 3. The plate 13 is further provided with an angular socket 16, in the present instance of square form, for receiving thelugor projection [2 on the disk 9 for locking the said disk and plate [3. An arm 17 projects from the edge of the plate 13, to which arm is hinged at 18 a springactuated locking-lever 19. The inner arm of this lever is provided with :1 lug 20, arranged to be brought into and out of engagement with the several notches 8 formed between the lugs 7 on the plate 3. A spring 21 is interposed between the arm 17 and the outer arm of the lever 19, tending to hold the lug 20 on the inner arm of the lever in engagement with one of the notches 8 on the plate 3. A cord or other device depends from the outer arm of the locking-lever 19 for the purpose of controlling the movements of the lever and also of the swinging part, as will now be described.
The spring 6 is brought up to the required tension to normally return the swinging part into alinement with its support when the lever downwardlyas, for instance, by the cord or other device 22-thus releasing the lug 20 from engagement with its notch 8. Sufficient strain may then be kept on the lever 19 to cause it to swing the part 1 to the required angular adjustments. The strain is then quickly released from the lever, thus permitting the notch 20 to drop into the nearest notch 8 on the plate 3, and thereby lock the swinging part 1 to its support 2. When it is desired to permit the swinging part to return to its normal position, the locking-lever 9 is released from the plate 3, and suificient strain is kept upon the lever to prevent the lever from interlocking with the plate before permitting the swinging part to return under the influence of the spring 6 to its normal position with respect to its support.
It is obvious that this hinge and lock may be applicable for use in many places where it is desired to swing one part with relation to another and lock the swinging part in different angular positions with respect to the stationary part.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the construction, form, and arrangement of the several parts. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth; but
What I claim as my invention is 1. A combined hinge and lock comprising a stationary plate, a swinging plate hinged thereto, a spring for returning the swinging plate to its normal position and means carried by the swinging plate for use in swinging said plate and for removably locking it to the stationary plate in difierentangular positions with respect thereto.
2. A combined hinge and lock comprising a stationary plate, a swinging plate hinged thereto, a spring for returning the swinging plate to its normal position and a locking-lever carried by the swinging plate for use in swinging said plate and fitted to interlock with the stationary plate for locking the swinging plate in its different angular positions with respect to the stationary plate.
3. A combined hinge and lock comprising a stationary plate, a swinging plate, aspringactuated rotary disk carried by the stationary plate and interlocking with the swinging plate for returning the swinging plate to its normal position by its spring tension and a locking-lever carried by the swinging. plate for use in swinging said plate and arranged to interlock with the stationary plate to hold the swinging plate at different angles with respect thereto.
1. A combined hinge and lock comprising a stationary plate having a socket therein, a disk, a spring located within the socket having one end attached to the stationary plate and its other end attached to the said disk, a swinging plate interlocked With the said disk, and means carried by the swinging plate for swinging the plate and locking it at different angles with respect to the stationary plate.
5. A combined hinge and lock comprising a stationary plate, a swinging plate hinged thereto, the stationary plate being provided with a series of notches and the swinging plate being provided with a spring-actuated looking lever arranged to interlock with said notches for locking the swinging plate at different angles with respect to the stationary plate, and a spring tending to return the swinging plate to its normal position when the locking-lever is released.
6. A combined hinge and lock comprising. a stationary plate, a swinging plate hinged thereto, an arm projecting from the swinging plate, a locking-lever hinged to said arm, a series of notches on the stationary plate arranged to be engaged by said lever for locking the swinging plate at diiferent angles with respect to the stationary plate and a spring for returning the swinging plate to its normal position when the lever is released.
7. A combined hinge and lock comprising a stationary plate and a swinging plate arranged with their faces in proximity to each other, a spring-actuated disk located in said plates for hinging the swinging plate to the stationary plate and tending to return the swinging plate to its normal position, and a locking-lever carried by the swinging plate for use in swinging the said plate and locking the same in different angular positions with respect to the stationary plate.
