SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '781,97' 9, dated February '7, 1905.
Application i'lled May 28,1904. Serial No. 210.217.
fo (LIZ wil/0711, it Hwy concerzf:
Beit known that I, NEWTON .ViLooxoN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chif cago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have i invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dumping-Cars; and l declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip'- tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates in general to d umpingcars, and more particularly to alatch for closing the side-boards of a car of the tilting-body type tightly against the bottom thereof when the body is swung into a horizontal position.
In d umping-cars of the type referred to it is customary to so support the side-boards that the one on the side of the carfrom which the material is dumped is permitted to swing outwardly, but is held in an elevated position when the body tilts downwardly. Then the body is swung into a horizontal position, it frequently happens that the side-board fails to automatically close, thereby causing inconvenience and loss of time.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a dumping-car of the tilting-body type in which the side-board on the dumping side of the car will be automatically closed and securely locked against the body of the car when the car is swung into a horizontal position after dumping.
A further object of my invention is to provide a latch for automatically swinging the side-board of a dmnping-car into closed position and tightly locking the same against the car-I )ody when the latter is swung into horizontal position.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved latch for a dumping-ear which will be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and eflicient in operation.
)ly invention, generally described, consists in a tongue rigidly secured to and projecting downwardly from the lower edge of the sideboard, near each end thereof, of a tilting dumping-car, a keeper fixed to the body of the car l l l in position to receive the tongue when the carbody is swung into a horizontal position, and a latch pivotally mounted in the keeper, the upper end of which projects outwardly when the car-body is tilted and serves as a guide to direct the tongue into the keeper when the body swings upwardly, the lower end of the latch projecting into the path of the tongue through the keeper, so as to be engaged by the tongue, thereby swinging the upper end of the latch inwardly into contact with the side-board and forcing the same tightly against the car-body.
My invention will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which the same is illustrated as embodied in a convenient and practical form, and in which- Figure l is an elevational view of a portion of the dumping-ear, showing the side-board closed ,against the body; Fig. Q, a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the body in an inclined position; and Fig. 3, an elevational view looking from the right in Fig. l.
The same reference characters are used to designate the same parts in the several ligures of the drawings.
A designates a portion of the end of a car- -body of the tilting' type.
fr designates the bottom of the car-body; A, an angle-beam extending longitiulinally beneath the bottom of the car, the end of which projects beyond the end of the car and serves to support the lower end of a brace u', which extends upwardly on the outside of and adjacent to the edge of the end A of the carbody.
A Vdesignates an angle-plate secured to and projecting along' the edge of the end A of the car-body against which the side-board of the ear is swung.
B designates one of the side-boards of the car, which is pivotally supported at each of its upper ends by a bolt ff, mounted in the bifurcated outer end of a support C. The support C is mounted in the usual manner upon the car structure and serves to support the side-board on the dumping side of the car in an elevated position when the car-body is tilted.
IOO
' board B. Any suitable means may be provided for fastening the keeper to the anglebeam Azsuch, for instance, as bolts d', extending through laterally-projecting'ears Z and through the vertical portion ofthe angle-V beam A2.
A swinging' latch E is located Within the keeper D and pivotally supported upon a r'od c, the latter extending through openings in the side walls of the keeper and having nuts secured on its ends. The portion of lthelatch E above its fulcrum is somewhat extended, so that when the body of the car is tilted it will project outwardly a considerable distance. as indicated in Fig. 2. below its fulcrum extends inwardly at an angle to the upper portion of the latch, so as to extend across the opening through the keeper when the upper portion of the latch is tilted outwardly, as shown in Fig'. 2. The top of the keeper serves as a stop to limit the outward swinging of the latch.
Secured to and projecting below the side board of the car at each end thereof is a tongue preferably formed integral with the strap B. The tongue Z/ is of a width adapted to be received Within the keeper D and is located in the same vertical plane as the latch E.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The body of the car is tilted by any wellknown means to the side to which it is desired to dump its contents. as, for instance, B--is held in an elevated position by its supporting-bar C when the 4corresponding side of the car-body swings downwardly, such relative movement between the side-board and car-body being' permitted by the downward movement of the keeper D away from the tongue L'. I/Vhen the contents of the car have been dumped, the body is vswung into a horizontal position, and in the movement the upwardly-rising side portion of the latch E above its fulcrum engages the lower end of the tongue and guides the same into the keeper D, thereby insuring' the closing of the side-board even though it may have swung outwardly at its lower edge a considerable distance away from the car-body. The lower end of the tongue after being guided into the keeper engages the inturned lower portion e of the latch and swings the latch into an uprig'ht position, so that the upper end thereof is forced into contact with the The portion of the latch A The side-board-v strap Bl, and thereby retains the side-board in closed position against the car-body. My
improved latch therefore not only insures the closing of the side-board of the car, but also prevents the same from rattling when closed.
It will of course be understood that latches such as described are located adjacent to each edge of each of the side-boards of the car and that for convenience I have merely shown a single latch and the adjacent portions of the dumping-car.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that I have invented an improvement in dumping-cars whereby the automatic closing of the side-board at the side of the car from which the material has been dumped is insured and the side-board is forced tightly against the adjacent edges of the end-boards of the car-body, thereby tightly closing the car and preventing rattling of the side-boards.
Thile I have described more or less precisely the details of construction, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I contemplate changes in form, the proportion of parts, and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient without departing from the spirit of my invention, and while I have disclosed my invention as embodied in a dumping-car it is obvious that it may be also embodied in a dumping-cart or other form of vehicle or in a dumping-receptacle of any construction.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a dumping-receptacle comprising a tilting' body and a pivotally-supported sideboard, the combination with a tongue depending from the lower edge of the side-board, a keeper secured to the body in alinement with said tongue, and means pivoted in the path of movement of said tongue for guiding the same into the keeper when the body is swung into a closed position.
2. In a dumping-car comprising' a tilting bod yand a pivotally-supported side-board, the combination withatong'ue depending' from the lower edge of the side-board, a keeper secured to the body in alinement with said tongue, a
latch pivotally mounted in the keeper andhaving an upwardly-projecting end adapted to be engaged by the tongue and guide the same into the keeper when the car-body is swung into closed position.
