To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stake-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to railway cars with particular reference to a novel stake pocket for use in connection therewith.
Railway cars of the flat bottomed gondola type are usually constructed of sheet metal such cars being commonly employed for the handling of coal and similar materials. However, such cars to be useful in general service must be adapted also for the handling of lumber which, in order that the car may carry its rated load, must be piled to a height greater than that of the sides of the car. This is likewise true in the handling of coke, racks or similar false work being erected above the sides. In order to provide for such loading of lumber, etc., it is usual to locate stakes inside of the car and these stakes should be held by suitable pockets. It has been common to rivet a rigid pocket on the interior of the car but this is objectionable for obvious reasons, not the least of which is that the pocket quickly becomes bent or damaged by heavy pieces of material falling thereon or by contact with an unloading bucket such as is frequently used to unload the contents of the car.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a collapsible stake pocket which shall be so located when not in use as to be entirely out of the plane of the inner surface of the car side and is not therefore likely to be damaged.
A further object is in the provision of an exceedingly simple device which may be applied without materially mutilating the car side.

line 22 of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plate which is used to close the opening in the car side. Referring more particularly to the drawings it will be seen that a plate 10, forming a portion of a car side is cut out to provide an opening 11, through which my novel bail or pocket member 12, is adapted to swing into the interior of the car. The trunnions 13, of the bail are located behind the plate 10, and are mounted in bearings or recesses 14, formed in a plate 15, which is secured to the car side by means of suitable rivets 16. Likewise the body portion of the bail normally rests when in the released position in a U-shaped groove 17 also formed in the plate 15. Thus when the bail is in the released position it is located entirely outside of the plane of the car wall and the space out out in the wall is filled by the plate15. In other words, the arrangement is such that no recess remains within which material, such as sand or coal dust, may accumulate. The car side is not weakened by the application of this device and'a strong and simple pocket is provided.
Obviously the construction might be considerably modified and such modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. I do not therefore wish to be limited to the exact construction shown.
I claim:
1. In a stake pocket, the combination of a car wall having an opening therethrough, a bail mounted to swing in said opening, said bail being provided with trunnions located on the outside of the car wall, and a plate having bearings for said trunnions and closing said opening, substantially as described.
2. I11 a stake pocket, the combination of a car side having a substantially rectangular opening therethrough, a bail having trunnions located outside of said wall, the said bail being adapted to swing in said opening, and a plate recessed to provide bearings for said trunnion and adapted to close and reinforce the opening through said wall, substantially as described.
