GEORGE r. PALMER-or BnookLrnNnwxYoRK.
l i Letters .Patent No. 78,123, dated May 19, 1868; antedted .May 5, 1868.V V
' ntrnovrn can; AND BEDSTEAD.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. PALMER, of Brooklyn, in the'connty of Kings, in the State of New York, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Cribs and Bedsteads, which sreespecially adapted for ohildrens use; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference. being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching a device, or making the device ,a part of the bodstcad, for the purpose of clamping the sides of the covers of a bed, and securely hold themin place, sot-hat t-hey cannot be removed by the turning, pushing, or restlessness of children when in bed, the nature of which I will hereafter fully explain when describing the drawings, in whichl l g Figure 1 represents a childs bedstead, with a partei each side made to be removable, and showing the near side removed. l i i Figure 2 represents a childs crib, having the bed-covers clamped by Athe removable or clamping sides.
Figure 3 represents an adnlts bedstead, Ahsving the clamping-piece on the inside ofthe permanentsides of the bedstead. I
Like'letters indicate corresponding parts in Vall the w'gures. i
In tig. 1, A. is the body of the bedstead. B B are removable parts of the sides, onwhich a a are springb'olts orcatches. l2 bare, tongues on the ends of the removable parts,-which iitinto corresponding grooves on the sideposts of the bedstead. In the grooves on th'e side posts are racks, which are rsbon'nby t, into the ribs or notches ot" which the spring-bolt catches, and thereby holds the removable part B i'irmly in place.
' Intig. 2'the parts are the same as in 5g. 1. C are tbe'bed-covers shown to be clamped by the removable sides B. i i l In iig. 3, B shows a modification o f the clamping-piece. The part B'is made to work inside ofthe permanent sides of the'bedstead, instead of on the topV oilthe permanent sides, as shown by figs. land 2, the' other parts boing substantially the same. y v
The spring-bolts a are made so that the'bolt can be retained back in the case or sheath, so as to remove all impediment to the veasy'renioval of the clamping part B.
The rack is made so that the bolt will slip down over theribs and catch on them, so that thebolts must'be drawn back before Athe removablepart can be raised. The tongue on the parts B, slipping in thc grooves on the side posts, keeps the part Bfrom moving*laterallyY when in position. l I
Theoperation of the crib or bedstead is thus: YPince the child in'b'ed, cover it as looselyas is desired, turn b the covers over the edge of the permanent sides of the bedstead; tlien'placc the sides B in position and press them down upon the covers, when the spring-bolts will catch inthe mel-:s b and hold the partsB doivn, thereby clamping-the bed-covers and keep thema-s placed.
The object of invention is to obtain a simple, easily-managed, and cflieientv moans oi' holding the hedcovers on children, and-prevent their` removal bythe turning, restlessness, or kicking of the childrenwithout the liability oi' the covers being torn, which isoi'ton the case whero'a short hold or gripe ismade'on thccovers,.
s such as when strings, buckles, 85e., are used for the purpose ot retaining the covers. v
My invention holds the covers, by n. .long gripe, firmly and securely until the covers are relieved from the clamping of the part B.
The clamp may be morlied so as to be adapted to werk Aon tbei'nsidc of the permanent sides of a bedstead, as shown by iig. 3, or by hinging the sides with a yielding hinge to accommodate the varying side's of the. covo-rs.
Having thus described my invention, Ifclaimf- Y v y 'l Abedstead, provided with a clamp, composed ot the part B, having spring-bolts a, and racks-fb, or their l equivalents, substantially as and for the purpose` shown and set forth.
