EXTENSION PIANO STOOL. APPLICATION I'iLED JUNE 23, 1904;

PATENT OFFICE.
EXTENSION PIANO-STOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,933,.dat6d January 24, 1905.
Application filed 111118 23, 1904. Serial No. 213,873-
T0 ctZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM THOS. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at J acksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extension Piano-Stools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in benches or stools for pianos and the like, particularly applicable for use as in duet-playing. My invention has for its object to readily provide for the adjustment of the seat to the required height for use, to effectively retain the latter when so adjusted, to provide for the convenient crating and shipping of the stool or bench and the reassembling of the parts thereof after the same has reached its place of destination, and to carry out the aforesaid purposes with facility and simplicity.
Said invention consists of the structural features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
of Fig. 2, respectively, looking in opposite directions. Fig. 7 is a detail side elevation showing the inclined cleat or bar.
In the carrying out of my invention I employ an outer frame 1, having suitably secured thereto at its corners and supported in elevated position by legs 2, preferably right-am gular in cross-section, with their upper ends -.terminating flush with the upper edges of said frame. Within this frame is arranged so as to fit snugly and move vertically therein a second corresponding frame 1, laterally from the inner. surface of which project inclined opposite cleats or bars 3, preferably seated fixedly in the direction of their lengths in corresponding recesses or mortises 3 in saidframe inner surfaces", the declination of said cleats or bars being away from the ends .of said frame toward the center thereof down ward and from the top to the bottom edges of said frame and duplicated for each end of the latter.
, Transversely within the inner frame 1, near the ends thereof, are arranged followers or slides 4, having therein lateral grooves 4c of a corresponding inclination with and receiving the projecting portions of the inclined the Ways or bars 5 and in contact therewith guide-bars 6 to prevent any skewing action of said slide or follower and its consequent binding upon said frame, said guidebars themselves being guided or controlled in their movement by correspondingly rabbeting the same and the bars 5, as at 6*, and securing to the upper surfaces of the latter, near their inner ends, a transverse bar 7 with its end portions resting-above or upon the bars 5.
A. suitably knobbed or headed screw 8, having its heads or knobs projecting beyond the respective ends of the stool or bench for convenient actuation; is threaded through and thus engaging both of the slides or followers 4:, such engagement being in the form of right and left hand screw-threads 8 8 respectively, whereby when said screw is actu-- ated said followers will be caused to travel in right lines toward or away from each other, as in raising or lowering the seat-board. Said screw has projecting laterally therefrom at suitable points projections or studs 8 adapted to contact with or engage studs 8, projecting from said followers or slides, to limit the actuation of said screw, as in preventing the inner frame bearing the seat-board from being lifted out of the plane of or above the outer fixed frame, the utility or desirability of which is apparent.
It is noted that the seat board may be readily adjusted according to the altitude required to accommodate the occupant or occupants, as in the use of the bench or stool; that great simplicity and facility of the actuation of the parts are attained; that said parts are enabled to be readily disassembled or taken apart, as in compactly packing the same for shipment, and as quickly be reassembled or put together upon reaching their destination, as after shipment, and that the parts are prevented from becoming disjointed or disconnected in use.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein, as they may be changed as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of my invention and the latter still be protected.
' I claim 1. A stool or bench of the character described, employing an outer suitably-supported frame, an inner movable frame bearing the seat-board, followers adapted to move in right lines and having lateral inclined grooves receiving corresponding cleats or bars connected laterally to the seat-bearing frame, and means for actuating said followers to effect the vertical movement of said seat-bearing frame.
2: A stool or bench of the character described, employing an outer suitablysupported frame, an inner movable frame bearing the seat-board, followers adapted to move in right lines and having lateral inclined grooves receiving corresponding cleats or bars connected laterally to the seat-bearing frame, and a screw adapted to actuate said followers to effect the vertical movement of said seat-bearing frame.
3. A stool or bench of the character described, employing an outer suitably-supported frame, an inner independent frame bearing the seat-board and having opposite lateral inclined cleats or bars, followers or slides arranged to move in right lines and having lat eral inclined grooves receiving said cleats, and a screw having right and left threads engaging and actuating said followers, respectively.
L. A stool or bench of the character described, employing an outer suitably-supported frame, an inner independent frame bearing the seat-board and having opposite inclined cleats or bars, followers adapted to move in right lines and having inclined grooves receiving said cleats or bars, and a right-and-lcft screw for imparting such right-line movement to said followers, said screw having lateral projections or studs adapted to engage, at a certain interval projections upon said followers.
5. A stool or bench of the character described, employing a suitably-supporterl fixed frame having inner lateral ways, followers adapted to move in right lines and sliding or supported upon said ways and having secured to their under surfaces guide-bars rabbetcd to register with corresponding rabbcted surfaces of said lateral ways, said guide-bars having secured to their upper surfaces a transverse bar, with its end portions resting upon said ways, an inner vertically-movable seat-bearing frame having fixed thereto inclined cleats or bars engaging corresponding grooves in said followers. and a right and left hand screw engaging said followers, respectively, and adapted together with said followers to limit the upward movement of said seat-bearing frame.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
