STOQL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,406, dated October 2, 1888.
(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMAN 0. SrrTIG, a citizen of the United States. residing at Normal Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stools, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The general object of my invention is to pro videa means whereby a stool or chair may be easily raised or lowered; and it is designed to furnish a practical and efiicient device whereby this end may be attained.
My invention relates to improvements in stools in which, instead of the usual screw, two or more plugs [it into the indentations or pockets of a revolving standard. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the ac companying drawing, which is a vertical section of the entire machine.
The leg or standard Aconstitutes the framework of the base. In the standard A freely turns the hollow cylinder B, of suitable mate rial, which has upon its inner surface at suitable distances indentations or pockets H H, for the reception of plugs E E. Through the cylinder B plays the post 0, to which is attached the seat of the stool K. Such post 0 plays freely through the cylinder B, and at or near the lower end of such post 0 a chamber, 0 G, is cut to allow space for the operation of the plugs E E. The bottom of such chamber 0' C is formed in wedge shape, the apex L and the sides L M, when the plugs E E are lowcred, forming the means of directing the plugs E E into the pockets I-I. Through the center of the post 0 plays the rod D, at the lower end of which, by suitable hinges, are attached the plugs E E. At the upper end of the rod D,by convenient pins, are attached the levers F G, conveniently fastened to the under side of the stool K in any suitable manner.
The operation would be as follows: Ahigher seat being desired, the levers G G, being raised, act upon the levers F F, by means of which rod D is raised, the upward movement of the rod D drawing the plugs E E out ot'such pockets H H as they are then resting in and into the chamber 0 O. The stool being then raised to the required height, the levers G G are relaxed, the levers F F are loosened, the rod D falls, and the plugs E E, falling upon the apex L, are respectively directed along the sides L M and fall into the pockets H of the revolving cylinder B, and thus firmly secure the seat at its necessary height. A lower seat being desired, the operation would be the reverse.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a stoolseat, K, of a revolving cylinder, B, with indentations H, the post 0, with the chamber 0 G", the rod D, the plugs E E, the wedged bottom L M, and the levers F and G, substantially as specified.
2. The rod D, having plugs E E attached, in combination with a revolving cylinder, 13, with indentations H,andt-he post(l,lravingthechamher 0 G, with a wed ge-shaped bottom,L M,substantially as shown, for the purpose specified.
