PATENT OFFICE.
SHELVING- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,455, dated January 17, 1905.
, Application filed June 27. 1904; Serial No. 214.335. I
T0 at whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH PANNEL TAYLOR,
a citizen of the United States, residing at P hiladelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and'use'ful Improvements in Shelving, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shelving forstoring valuable papers, books, merchandise, &c.', and has for its object the provision of a device-for installation in warehouses, &c., by which a maximum amount of space is utilized for storage purposes.
To this end my invention consists of a number of shelf units suspended from overhead rails or mounted upon trucks and arranged so that they may be secured together when the articles thereon are not in use and that may be moved so that any one of said shelf units may be got at when it is desired to get at the articles on said shelf unit.
The construction and advantages of my invention will fully appear hereinafter and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of a storeroorn, showing its arrangement in connection with my improved shelving for economical storage. Fig. 2 is a front view of one of the shelf units, showing it suspended from overhead rails; Fig. 3, a side view of the unit shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a view of amodification, showing the shelf unit mounted upon wheeled trucks. 1
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In Fig. 1, A represents a store-room having a door B and windows (I. D represents a number of shelf units arranged at one side of the-room A, it being shown that the combined length of the shelf units is less than the length of said room A, so as to leave a space E of suflicient width that an operator may get at the articles contained on the shelves on each side of said space. By moving the shelf units as will be hereinafter described they may be so positioned that the space E will come between any two units to enable the shelves thereon to be packed or unpacked. Between the side of the room in which are located the windows C and the sides of the shelf units D is left an aisle F.
In'Figs. 2 and 3 are shown one of the shelf units Dsuspended from rails G by means of rollers H, secured to axles I, journaled in bearings J, secured to unit D. K represents a chain M is to move the unit by means of acrank N, that may be removably and replaceably secured on the end of the shaft of sprocket-wheel L. 0 represents a hook near .one edge of the unit, and Pa pin near the opposite edge thereof, the purpose ofthe hooks and pins being to secure the various units together, it being understood that all of the units are constructed alike. Q represents buffers to relieve the jar when two of the units are brought together.
In Fig. 4 the unit D is shown mounted on truck-wheels H, secured to axles I, said truck-wheels being mounted on rails G, if
desired. In this form of unit the same means for moving the unit may be provided as that described for the suspended structure--viz., a sprocket-Wheel K, keyed to axle I, asprocket- Wheel L, journaled on the side of unit D, and a chain M, geared to said sprocket-wheels.
Having thus described my invention, What 1. In shelving, rails suitably secured, shelf units mounted on said rails, and gearing to actuate said units, substantially as shown and described.
2. In shelving, rails suitably secured, shelf units, axles, journaled on said units, rollers secured to said axles and mounted on said rails, and means to rotate said axles to actuate said units, substantially as shown and described.
3. In shelving, rails suitably secured, shelf units, axlesjournaled on said units, rollers secured to said axles and mounted on said rails, and gearing connected with one'of said axles for actuating it, substantially asshoWn and described. 7
sprocket-wheel keyed to one of the shafts I,
unit, a sprocket-wheel secured to one of said axles, a chain geared to said sprocket-wheels, and a crank to actuate the sprockctwheel 5 journaled on the unit, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof 1 hereto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH PANNEL TAYLOR.
