To all whom, it Uta/y concern:
Be it known that I, AUeUs'rUs H. Jones, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Salt or Pepper Dredges; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view of a salt or pepper dredge constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view thereof; Fig. 3, a transverse sectional view on the line a Z) of Fig. 2.
This invention relates to an improvement in salt and pepper dredges, and while applicable to various styles relates particularly to dredges formed from glass or other vitreous material and in which the discharge end is formed integral with the body, the invention particularly relating to the formation of the dis-- charge end of the dredge, whether or not that end is made integral with the body or separate therefrom and adapted to be connected therewith, the object of the invention being the formation of the top or cap from glass or vitreous material in which the discharge-openings are formed during the process of pressing the glass and which does not require grinding or breaking away of portions of glass or other material to form the opening; and the invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ a body A, which may be of any approved design, preferably open at its lower end, which is adapted to be closed by a plug B, of material corresponding to the body A, and held in place by a screw-ring or collar C, which engages with external threads on the body.
The upper end or top D is imperforate and the sides of the top immediately below the upper end are straight, and in this straight portion are a series of discharge-openings E, more or less in number, these openings being formed by a plunger having teeth corresponding in number to the number of the openings E and of a diameter corresponding to the external diameter of the upper portion of the top, and so that as it is forced into the dredge the plunger will displace the material, forming a series of ribs E between the openings E, and by coming into contact with the external die leave no material between them, and consequently forms the openings E. The size of the opening depends upon the extent to which the plunger is forced into the die. Preferably and as herein shown the interior of the top or cap D is formed with a central point or cone Cr, which tends to break up the salt or other condiment in the dredge and deflects it through the discharge-openings E. By thus forming the openings in the sides of the upper end or cap of the dredge by a plunger no grinding or cutting away of material is nec essary, as the openings are completed by the dies and plunger.
WVhile I have shown a top or cap formed integral with the body, it will be apparent, even without illustration, that it may be formed independent thereof and secured in any of the well-known methods of applying caps or tops to condiment-holders. I therefore do not wish to be understood as lin'iiting the invention to the exact construction shown, but hold myself at liberty to make such departures therefrom as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A salt or pepper dredge having its upper end closed by an imperforate top, the external diameter of the top corresponding to the internal diameter of the upper portion of the In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib- 10 mg witnesses.
