Be it known that I, WILLIAM h/IAX KUBoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Manifold Sales-Books, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in account or sales books for the special use of clerks in stores and other places where sales form the larger part of the daily business.

The special object of this invention is to provide a simple and handy account-book by which record of the sales may be kept, the book being formed in compact shape and of a suitable size for the purposes for which it is usually employed.

It is a further object of this invention to combine the holder for the pad and means for retaining the leaves written upon in such position as not to interfere with the leaves to be written upon and to so form the holder as to permit of the ready insertion of a new pad. The holder itself is also provided Withcertain prominently-disposed openings, through which is apparent the name of the clerk or salesman to whom the book is assigned or belongs.

Further details of this invention will appear in the following description and are fully and clearly illustrated in the drawings accompanying the same and forming a part of this specification, in whieh- Figure l is a perspective of the book including the holder and pad. Fig. 2is a detail in plan of the pad including the carbon and protecting sheets which are secured to the pad. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, A represents the holder, which consists of metal or other material equally adapted for the purpose of offeringa firm backing for the pad, as well as protecting means therefor, which consists of upper and lower leaves a and a, respectively, which are pivotally secured together. Referring to the leaf (6, which forms the lower supporting means for the pad, it is to be noted that the same has formed therein at its forward edge a substantially rectangular hollow flange 0, provided with an opening 6 in the front face thereof, which flange is adapted to receive a card a, displaying the name of the clerk or salesman to whom the book belongs. This flange is formed by doubling the metal of the lower leaf (1/ upon itself, leaving suflicie'nt distance between the forward portion and the end of the metal bent in toward the front edge to permit of the insertion of this card. This leaf (6 is furthermore provided in its face with an opening f, through which is readily apparent the name of the clerk or salesman, while at the rear portion of the leaf and integral therewith is an upwardly-extending flange 7, which is of the same height as the forward flange of this leaf a. Upon the inner face of this flange g are formed pointed lugs g, which are stamped from metal and adapted to engage pad to hold the same in place.

The upper central portion of the flange g has formed thereon a fold of metal substantially cylindrical and disposed centrally of the flange 9, while the leaf a has formed thereon similar folds of metal (r that are disposed adjacent each side edge of this leaf a. In assembling the parts the two hollow folds a fall at either side of the fold or roll 9", the opening in these parts registering for the insertion of the lower arm 0 of the member 0, which member securely holds the two leaves in pivotal connection.

Referring more particularly to the leafholding member C, it is seen that this portion is formed of a strand of wire or other suitable material in substantial U shape. the base 0 having the arms 0 and 0 extending at substantial right angles in parallelism above the same. This member has its corners well rounded to prevent any evil result from handling the book. In assembling the parts it is to be noted that the arm a is inserted into the folds of the two leaves,forming a pivot for the same, while the arm 0 extends upwardly above the two leaves, as clearly seen in Fig. 2. 7

Any pad such as is indicated by B may be used, the present pad having the supportingback 6, which projects slightly in advance of the paper of the pad and upon insertion into the holder engages beneath the flange e of the leaf (4. Vithin this pad are the carbonsheet (Z and the protecting-sheet (Z, the use of which is well understood in the art.

After the assemblage of the parts as herein indicated, the pad being held within the holder A by means of the arrangement of the backing b with the flange e and the lugs g with the back of the pad 7), it is only necessary for the clerk to write out an order or account upon the upper sheet and have it reproduced upon the lower sheet, whereupon the original sheet is removed and the duplicate pushed back beneath the leaf-holder or member C, where it is held out of the way of the clerk when writing upon the ensuing sheet for another entry. In the position of the book as seen in Figs. 1 and 3 the arm 0 stands practically at right angles to the holder and the leaves are engaged beneath the same.

The objects of this invention having been stated, the advantages of the structure herein set forth are readily apparent. It is believed that this is a new departure in the art pertaining to this class of invention, and Ido not wish to be limited to the details of the invention; but

hat is claimed as new, and desired to be protected by Letters Patent, is

In an article of the class described, the combination with a pad having a reproducingsheet therein, of a-holder comprising a pair of pivotally-connected leaves, means upon one leaf for securely holding the pad thereon, and a member pivotally connecting the two leaves and projecting normally above said holder for retaining the leaves of the pad so as to prevent interference when writing upon the other leaves of the pad, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the type set forth the combination with a pad, of a holder comprising two pivoted leaves, and a leaf-holder projecting upwardly therefrom and securing the two leaves in pivotal connection, substantially as described.

3. In combination with a writing pad, a holder comprising two pivotally connected leaves, and a leaf-holder securing the leaves in pivotal connection, substantially as described.

4:. In an article of the class described a holder comprising two pivoted members formingupper and lower leaves, and a leaf-holding member comprising two substantially parallel arms, one of said arms securing the leaves in pivoted position, substantially as described.

5. In combination with a pad, a holder comprising a pair of leaves and a leaf-holder provided with parallel arms, one of said arms pivotally securing the leaves of the holder, substantially as described.

6. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pad having a backin g extending beyond the leaves thereof, a holder comprising two pivotally-connected leaves, one of said leaves being provided with angular projecting lugs, and a substantially rectangular flange, said flange being provided with a display-opening therein, and receiving the forward end of the backing thereunder, and a leaf-holder pivotally securing the leaves of the holder, substantially as described.

7. In a device of the character described, the combination with a writing-pad, having a backing extending beyond the leaves thereof, a holder comprising a pair of pivoted leaves, one of said leaves having pad-securing lugs at one end and a flange at the other end receiving the end of the backing beneath the same, and a leaf-holder pivotally connecting the two leaves of the holder, substantially as described.
