Be it known that I, WiLIJAM O. LESLIE, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, haveinvcntcd certainfnewand useful Improvements in Brick-Machines; and I de hereby declare that the followingis a full .and exact. description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being'had to the annexed vdrawings, forming part hereof, in which drawingst l Figure 1 represents a side view, and
'Figure 2 a top view ofthe'inachine.
Figure 3 represents a front view of the cam and yoke bywhich the plunger is operated.
Figure 4 represents a front view of either of the two partially-oogged wheels which form a Vportion of the mechanism employed for reciprocating the mould-carriage. i
Figure 5 represents a perspective view, from below, of the mould-carriage way-track, and pressure-plate, and also of the mechanism for reciprocating the carriage, only one ofthe racks employed being shown.
The improvement-s herein described relate to'lthe machine for which Letters Patent were granted to me, `6th i August, 1867. i
The said improvements consist, iirst, of a combination and arrangement of mechanism for reciprocating the horizontal plunger; second, of a combination'andavrangement of mechanism for reciprocating the mould-carriage In figs. 1 and 2, A represents theloor of the machine. in which there are two corruga'ted'rollers,C and D. E, El, E2, and E3 are cog-wheelsdxed on the Vjournals of tllese rollers.
H is ashaft, carrying the knives h, and the sweep t. The lower bearing of the shaft E'. is in the bottom of the tub G, and the upperend of said shaft has bearingin a standard, h2. its and h4 are bevel-'gear wheels by which theshaft H is turned. There is an aperture, g, in `the bottom ofthe tub G, leading into the chamber g1. I is a horizontal plunger which w'orksthroughl the chamber g1, and presses the tempered clay before itinto the bex g2# J' is a vertical plunger, working in the box y. It is connected bya link, asl 'shown in '1li-g. 1, with the yoke K,-
which is composed of four vertical posts k, a bottom, kv, and a top, k, frornwhich latter proceeds the shaftlc,
which slides up and down through an aperture of corresponding sectional size in the standard c. Il, figs. 1 and 3, is a cam attached to the shaft M, on 4which there is a pinion, N, which gears into a spur-wheel, 0, the journals of which bear in the standards I. Theiwheel O gearsinto a similar Wheel, P, the journals of whichjalso have` The wheel I? gears into thepinion Q, the shaft of which has hearings `in the downward projections 1- r of the sides R It of the mould-carriageway'. S, igs 1, 4 5, is a wheel, with a4 hearings in the standards Pl.
segment of'cogs thereon, as shown. Thiswhccl S is placed on the shaft o`f the pinion Q, and is locatedso as to gear into the rack T, which is attached to the under side of the mouldfcarriage. Thepinicn-wheel Q gears into a similarwheel Q, the journ als of which have bearings in the projcctionsr r', before referred to, Sis a segments cog wheel similar to the wheel S, it being placed on the shaft of thevpinion-whecl Q, and'located so as to gear into a rack, similar to the rack T. The rack referred to is no t shown, but it is attached to the under side of the mouldcarriage, opposite the rack T.
B is the preparatory meshing or crushingftub;
Fis a chute by which the crushed clay isconducted from the tub B into the mixing-tub G.
The pressure-plate U, the track V, the mould-carriage W, and the mould X, are in form similar to the like' i parts described in my said Letters Patent.
Y, fig. 5, is a cog-wheel, place-d on the shaft ofthe wheel S. Z, which is on the shaft 1, which also carries the bevel-cog wheel 2, which gears into the'bevel-cog wh'eel 3, in the vertical shaft 4, the journals of whichvbear in thel cross-bars 5 6, figs. 1 and 2. 'i' is a. crank on the upper-,end
- of shaft 4. The crank, 7, is provided with a pin, shown in figs. 1 and 2, which travels in aslot in the camcryoke i 8, a top view of' which is shown intred ink in ltig. 2. The cam 8 'is attached'to or forms a part of the. horizontal plunger I. i
Power is applied to the wheel O. Clay from the pit is fed into the tub B, where it is crushed by the' action of the rollers C andD, and passes through the chute F into the mixing-tub Gr." Here it is thoroughly tempered by the action of the revolving- The `cog-wheel Y gears into the cegmheel.J

knives k, and nally swept into the chamber g by the rotary sweep h1. It ispressed from this chamber by the plunger I, into the box y, and it-is pressed by the vertical plunger J, operated by the cam L, ir-:tothe moulds, as they arealternately presented by the carriage. Y
The 'segment-cog wheels 'S and-S', through the gearing described, have imparted to them, by the drivingwheelo, a. continuous rotary motion, and their action on the racks T is sch as to imparta. reciprocating motion to the mould-carriage W. Y
There is also imparted, by the gearing described, a continuous rotary motion tothe crank, 7, which, acting by means othe pin shown, through the slotted com or yokc 8, impartsl a reciprocting motion to thenhorizontal plunger I, thearrengement of which is such ns tcause it to press theV temperedclay into the box g, und, by pausing, confine it there, while theiverticalplungerd presses it downinto the mould. t
The operationof tho pressureplzrte, mouldfcarriagefmoulds, and track is similar to the operation of the similar parts described in my said Letters Patent, v
Having thus described my improvements, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The 'combination -of the pug-mill or mixing-tub Gr 'with the chamber g1, having the plunger I working therein, th'e chamber g2 iriththeplunger J, and the reciprocating mould-carriage W, all constructed and ranged to operate substantially `as Ishown and described. A
42. The mouldcarriage,provided with tho'racks T,in combination with the'segment-wheels S and S', and the spur-wheels Q and Q', when arranged as `show n und described, for the purpose of imparting to the'mould- WM. O. LESLIE. 1 Witnesses:
