JAMES W. THOMPSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PICTURE-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,920, dated January 3, 1905.
' Application filed May 29, 190s. serai N0. 159,242.
To w/Z whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. THOMPSON, a
l citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Supports, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for supporting pictures, display-cards, notices. and analogous articles; and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, convenient, and inexpensive device which may be readily applied to a picture or article to be displayed in such a manner as to be rendered convenient for packing and shipment and which may be readily adjusted to form a firm support for the picture or article when it is desired to exhibit the same.
Io these ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a rear view of a display-card or picture with a support made according' to and embodying my invention applied thereto, said support being shown attened out prior to adjustment. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof, showing the support adjusted and supporting a displaycard or picture. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section showing the upper end of one of the reinforcements and connected parts.
In said drawings, A designates a displaycard or picture of any desired form and size, and B the supporting device secured upon the rear side thereof, said supporting device B consisting of one integral strip or piece of cardboard or other suitable pliable material comprising a rigid section C, adapted to be glued or otherwise suitably secured to the rear of the object to be supported, and a hinged section D, depending from the lower edge of the rigid section O. At the opposite kedges of the strip B, at the junction of the rigid section C and the hinged section D, are provided inwardly and downwardly inclined slits E E, which extend inwardly about a third of the width of the strip B and serve to partly sever the hinged section D from the rigid section O. The under surface of said hinged section D is scored along the lines a a, which extend from the inner ends of the slits E E, parallel with the longitudinal edges of said hinged section D, to its bottom edge, and F F denote wings or reinforcements which are adapted to be bent upwardly at right angles to the intermediate portion D of the hinged section D upon the lines a a, which reinforcements terminate at their upper edges in inclined ends formed by the slots E E, which edges are adapted to contact with the rear surface of the rigid section O or the picture or object to hold the latter duly in position when the hinged section D and the reinforcements F F are adjusted to the position shown at Fig. 2.
Without limiting' myself to the precise details of construction herein shown and described, which may be varied within the scope of the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,`is--.
l. A support for pictures and other objects composed of pliable material comprising a section adapted for securement to a picture or other object, and a hinged section having an intermediate portion and sides provided with inclined upper ends which project above the top of said intermediate portion, substantially as specified.
2. A support for pictures and other objects composed of pliable material comprising a section adapted for securement to a picture or other object, and a foldable section depending from said first-named section having an intermediate portion and sides provided withl inclined upper ends which project above the line of junction of said intermediate portion with the section iirst named, substantially as specified.
3. A support for pictures and other objects consisting of an integral piece of pliable material comprising a section adapted for securement to a picture or other object, and a foldable, extensible section depending from said section having an intermediate portion and sides adjustable to positions at angles to said IOO intermediate portion, and the upper ends of said sides inclined and projecting above the line of junction of the intermediate portion with the section first named, substantially as specified.
4. A support for pictures and other object consisting of an integral piece of pliable material comprisinga section adapted for securement to a picture or other object, and a hinged section depending from said first-named section having an intermediate portion and sides adjustable in relation to said intermediate portion; said sides having inclined upper ends extending upwardly and outwardly from the points of intersection of the inner edges of the sides with the line of junction of the intermediate portion with the section first named, substantially as specified.
5. A support for pictures and other objects consisting of an integral piece of pliable material comprising a section adapted for secu rement to a picture or other object, and a hinged section depending from said first-named section having an intermediate portion and sides adjustable to positions at angles to said intermediate portion along weakened lines, said sides having inclined upper ends which project above the line of junction of the intermediate portion with the section first named, substantially as specified.
6. A support for pictures and other objects,
consisting of an integral piece of pliable material comprising a rigid section adapted for securement to a picture or other object, and a hinged section depending from said rigid section having reinforcements along its edges arranged at right angles thereto and terminating at their upper edges in inclined ends adapted to contact with the rear surface of the rigid section, substantially as specified.
7. A support for pictures and other objects consisting of 4an integral strip of pliable material comprising a rigid section adapted for securement to a ,picture or other object, a hinged section depending from said rigid section, and partially severed therefrom at the junction of said hinged and rigid sections by inwardly and downwardly inclined vslits arranged in the opposite edges thereof, longitudinal reinforcements arranged along the edges of said hinged section at right angles to the intermediate portion, and terminating at their upper edges in inclined ends adapted to contact With the rear surface'of said rigid section, substantially as specified.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, this28th day of May, 1903.
