ROBERT v. HILTON, JOHN G. WEBSTER, AND HIRAM E. WHEELER, OE
' LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters ,Patent 'Nm 77.8'81, dated May 12, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT 1N QIIISEL-IIANDLES.
TO ALL WHOM IT .MAY GONCERN:
Bo it known that we, ROBERT V. HILTON, JOHN G; WEnsTsn, and linten E. ,WnEELEInnlI o.Lowell, in V the county .ot` Middlesex, und State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new und useful Improvements in the Handles which arc Used with Chisels, 4Gfouges, and other similar tools, of which the following is e full, clear,
and exsct description, reference being had to the accompanying drawhngs, making portr of this specification, in
whie'h- ,L Y
Figure l1 is o, central longitudinal section of u h nndlo which is nsed'with n'socket-chisetor gouge, and with enr improvement `applied thereto.
Figura 2 is a. side elevation f the same. Figure 8, n side elevation of n handle which is used with the'ordinsry firmer-chisel.
. This invention ond' improvement consist in theemployment of an elastic or :t yielding substance belnjeen l tivo rigid or unyielding substances, und applied to-the top ends or the operetingends 'of handles which arensed A with various kinds of ohiscls or gauges employed by carpenters and other wood-Workers, and4 has for its Object te prevent such hnndles being split orotherwise injured, by blows of a. hnni'mexor n mullet, in driving the gouge or the chisel into wood.
1 In constructing n'nd applying our invention, n central plug, A, is first formed at the top or the operating-A .end of -the handle C, and of. the length desir-ed; then one, two, or more'njashers, Bof leizth'er-Or vnlcnnized` rubber, or seme otheelastic or yielding substance, is placed on the epd'of the handle,` the hole 4in each n'nsher fitting closely tothe outer surface or diameter of the plug. C is the body .of kthe chisel-hnndlel There should be n. suiloient thickness formed of the above-named washers tobrin'g the upper orthe outerv washer, B, nem' the extremity or top cnd of the plug, but s'ucient room must be left for a washer, E, of d ry -hide or raw hido,\vhich tits on to theplug A above or beyond theleath'cr er tho rubber. I V.
This lust named washer may be of metal, or 'any other hard lund tough substance, that vill resist the action of u mullet or a hummer, and endure for a long` time. i The plug A should protrude through the upper or outer washer one-si rteenth of tn inch or more, so that u. few blows of n mgllet or .ahnmmer willupset the wood, and prevent' tlie upper washer coming of or being 4 disengaged while the handle Vis in use ivith n. chisel or other tool.V
-When this improvement is applied to a. hnndle, ns cbove'described, the elastic or Vyielding substance E, between the en'd-ofthe handle and the other herd and tough .substance E, (und all of th em,) will endure for o. great length of time, and protect that end of the hnndl e,`end either of'the ports .may be easily renewed when it hns become Ivorn or injured.
Wirst we claim usnew, und .desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The handle C, plixg A, elastic rings B B, and cap E, constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purpose as described.
