Bo it known that we, ROBERT V. This invention ond' improvement consist in theemployment of an elastic or :t yielding substance belnjeen l tivo rigid or unyielding substances, und applied to-the top ends or the operetingends 'of handles which arensed A with various kinds of ohiscls or gauges employed by carpenters and other wood-Workers, and4 has for its Object te prevent such hnndles being split orotherwise injured, by blows of a. hnni'mexor n mullet, in driving the gouge or the chisel into wood.

This lust named washer may be of metal, or 'any other hard lund tough substance, that vill resist the action of u mullet or a hummer, and endure for a long` time. i The plug A should protrude through the upper or outer washer one-si rteenth of tn inch or more, so that u. few blows of n mgllet or .ahnmmer willupset the wood, and prevent' tlie upper washer coming of or being 4 disengaged while the handle Vis in use ivith n. chisel or other tool.V

-When this improvement is applied to a. hnndle, ns cbove'described, the elastic or Vyielding substance E, between the en'd-ofthe handle and the other herd and tough .substance E, (und all of th em,) will endure for o. great length of time, and protect that end of the hnndl e,`end either of'the ports .may be easily renewed when it hns become Ivorn or injured.
