Description
UNITED STATES CHANDLER POOR, OF DU'BUQUE, IOWA,
IMPROVEMENTIN DENTAL MALLETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,133, dated September 18, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, CHANDLER POOR, of the city and county of Dubuque, in the State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful instrunient for use in the practice of dentistry in lling or plugging teeth, which I call The Piston-Mallet,77 for condensing gold or other substance in teeth; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. i I describe the parts of said instrument in detail, Vsubstantially as follows:
First. The piston a, with socket drilled in the end b of a sufficient depth and diameter to carry any ordinary mallet-plugger, which plugger is held in position by a set screw, c, or any other fastening. From the shoulder d to the apex c the piston is lessened in diameter and flattened, and is terminated at the apex c by a nut to retain the mallet 'i in place 4upon the piston. The oliice of the piston is to carry the mullet-pluggen and to carry and direct the mallet.
Second..The spring-a spiral spring, f which is placed over the ilattened extremity of the piston and resting on the shoulder cl. The oice of the spring is to cause the mallet t' to rebound or rise from the impinging shoulder g when the pressure is taken oft' after the blow or stroke is given, as represented in Fig. l.
" Third. The mallet ht' consists of a handle, h,
and head i. The handle is of such proportions as to admit ot a cylindrical hole being drilled through it of a diameter that will permit the mallet to ride on the piston from shoulder d to shoulder g, and to carry within it the spiral springf. At one extremity of the handle three or more set-screws, 0 o o, are fixed to keep the mallet from turning on the piston by the points riding against the flattened sides of the piston from d to e. The head of the mallet i is at the other extremity of the handle, and is of such size, form, and weight as will give proper and sufficient force to the blow or stroke. The movement of the mallet is parallel with the piston, and is used by striking it against the shoulder g with sufcient force to produce the desired blow, and enables the operator to dispense with the aid of an assistant in plugging cavities of teeth by mallet-pressure.
Fourth. j is a common malletplugger.
Vhat Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The sliding mallet i, piston a, spring f, and socket b, by means of which to apply force to a common plugger or point in filling teeth. My claim has no reference to said plugger or point, except in the manner of applying force to the same.
