Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE OHAUNOEY M. HOOKER, OF HARTFORD, OONNEOTIOT.
4IMPROVEM ENT IN DENTISTS4 TOOTH-PLUGGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,257, dated September 25, 1866; antcdated May l, 1865.
To all whom 'it may concern.:
Beit known that I, GEAUNCEY M. HOOKER,
` of the city of Hart-ford, county of Hartford,
I do hereby declare that the following is a correct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a dentists tooth-plugger, to be used by the hand of the operator without the aid of an assistant.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to dcscribe the construction and operation of the same.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of the instrument, Fig. 2, a part sectional view ofthe saine.
The general form. and appearance of my tooth plugger or filler are similar to a tubular pencil-case with an enlarged head at the top part, made solid and weighted to give rm ness to the force of the blow when striking on the end of the stem of the plugger.
The tube A I make of the required length and size, as shown in the drawings. The head B screws on at thejoint b.
e The stem D of the plugger E extends the whole length of the tube A inside, and the upper end strikes against a rubber stop,c,
which is placed in the head B for the purpose, and which gives a softer and pleasanter blow or concussion than if the end of the stem were struck against metal.
The upper part of the stem D is made square to keep the point of the plugger from turning when in operation, and slides through a square orifice in the collar F. rlhis collar F acts as a check to the upper end of the spiral spring Gr.
,The spiral spring Gr is made in diameter the same size as the internal space of the main tube A, working freely in the same, and encircles the stem D, and when compressed into the tube A the upper end butts against the collar F, and the lower end against the stop H of the stem D at the lower end of the tube A.
A collar, I, encircles the round lower part` of the stem and tits into the lower part of the tube permanently by means of a screw or other mechanical device, so that the round part of the plugger-stein may slide freely through the collar when in operation.
To use my plugger, the operator takes the tube A between his thumb and fingers and gives a reciprocating movement to the same, causing the upper end of the stem D to strike against the rubber stop b in the head, which gives the required force or blow to the same as if struck b v a small hammerl or mallet; and
the blow can be regulated by the impulse of.
the operator, gently or forcibly, as the case may require.
The point end of the plugger E, when placed on the gold filling in the tooth, will remain vpressing against the same, by the tensionpressure of the spiral spring, without moving, while the operator gives the reciprocal motion to the tube and the blow on the end of the stem.
'Ihe utility of my invention consists in the facility and ease of iilling J[he teeth without the aid of an assistant, and the delicacy and the correctness with which the force of the blow on the stem of the plugger can be regulated by the feelin g and impulse of the operator.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the spiral spring G, or its equivalent, to give the reciprocating movement, as described, in combination with the tube A, head B, rubber stop b, .stem D, and collars F and H, in the manner substantially as described.
