DENTAL PLUGGER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,768, dated April 26, 1887.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM LOEWEN'IHAL, a resident of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improved Dental Plugger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,

reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, of my improved dental plugger; and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.

This invention relates to a new mallet or plugger for dentists, and more particularly to the class of angle-pluggers; and it has for its object to simplify the construction of these instruments by attaching the operating-tool directly to a spring, which embraces the end of the operating-shaft, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawings, the letter A represents the handle of my improved tool, which handle is, by preference, hollow and slightly conical, and slipped over the end of a block, B, that contains the driving-shaft (l. The handle A contains the driven shaft D, which, when the parts A and B are united, as in Fig. 1, is overlapped by a part of the driving-shaft, as at a in the drawings, so as to be revolved thereby. At the end of the driven shaft is a head, b, or an enlargement, which carries one or more projecting buttons, (1. These buttons may all be of the same length, or may vary in length, as may be desired.

E is aspring, having one end secured to the handle A, while its other end is turned under the head b,having the buttons (1, the free end of the spring being in such a position with respect to the head I) that it will normally be in contact with said head. To this free end of the spring E is secured by suitable means the plugging tool or mallet F, which, as appears very clearly from Fig. 1 of the drawings, is substantially at right angles to the shaft D. By having the spring E turned over the head I) the tool F can be screwed or otherwise secured to the end of the spring, and a holder dispensed with. e

It is clear that when the shaft D is revolved the tool F, which is carried by the spring E, is reciprocated. For greater convenience and certainty of operation, I attach a guide-piece, e, to the handle A, through which guide-piece the tool F is passed, as shown.

An inspection of Fig. 1 will render it clear that the tool F can be conveniently placed over the end of a tooth for hammering in a crown-filling, or for performing any other work in the tooth in the direction of its axis. The patient will not have to hold his mouth very widely open to admit this tool, because the handle A is at right angles to the tool F proper. I

The instrument is as convenient for use on the teeth of the upper jaw as on those of the lower jaw, and can be used not only for plugging, but also for cutting teeth or doing other work on the same.

I am aware that it has been proposed to operate an angle-plugger by cams striking against a lug on the side of the tool-holder; but such construction requires two guides for the holder, and does not give so direct a blow as in my form of plugger.

NVhat I claim is- 1. The combination of the shaft D, having one or more projections, d, thereon, with the handle A, carrying the spring E, which enibraces the end of the shaft D, and with the operatingtool F, which is attached to said spring E, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The shaft D, having projection (1, combined with the handle A, spring E, guidepiece e, and operating-tool F, said tool being attached to said spring at a place where the projection d strikes said spring, and passed through said guide-piece, as specified.
