Be it known that- I,EDwAnD D Erz, of Philadelphia, Pennsylyania, have invented an Adjustable Sofa;4

and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. i

' My invention consists of certain devices, fully described hereafter, whereby the hack of a sofa may be turned to and maintained at any desired inclination, or -in a position level'with that ofthe body. 4

In'order to enable others to make nuduse my invention, I will now proceed to describe Reconstruction and4 operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a .partcf this specification, andi in which- Figure l is an end view of my improved sofa, i

The body of the sofa consists of two end-frames supported-on legs in the usual manner, sind connected together by longitudinal strips, upon which rests a detachable cushion.

A, iig,r1, represents one of the end-frames, 'the rear of which is rounded, as shown, so as toform a bearing, onwhichone of the end-frames, B, of the buck ofthe sofa can rest and turn.

In the upper surface of the rounded rer portions ofthe end-frames A are any suitable number o'f notches a a, for a purpose described hereafter. 4 v l To each end-frame B is attached an arm, c, (figs, 1 and 2,) which'fprojects some distance below the saidI frames, und is hinged by apin, 9;,'to the end-frame ofthe body. i I

The inside of each of the'endframes' B of the back is recessed vfor the reception ,cfa spring-bolt, d, contained and operating within a casing,' H, and lthe latch-head of which projects below the said end-frames B, and into the notches a a of the rounded renr portion of the end-frames A ot` thebody, as shown in the enlarged view, fig. 5.

When it'is desired to change the inclination of the hack of the sofa, or tofornrabcdstead, all that is necessary is to pull the cords Z l, thus withdrawing the bolts d from those of the notches a, in which they may he fitting. rihe end-frames B of the hack may then be 'turned upon therounded rear portions-of the end-frames A of the body, u'ntil they assume the desired inclination or position, in which they will be secured upon releasin'fr the cords Zland levers e c, thereby'allowing the spring-bolts d te project into those of the notches a,`to

To the rear of the end-.frames B of the back are hinged legs.m"m,for the support of the back when turned to a, level withthe body, so as to form bedste'ad.l These legs;V when not in' use, arerfolded against the rear'cf the back, and nre secured in either position by hooked rods adapted to staples on the rear of the s cfa, as shown in lig, 3.. f

The rounded and notched rear portion of the lendif-rame A of the sofa, in 'combination with the endframes of the hack, hinged to the body, and provided with spring-bolts adapted to theA notches on the said roundedportions of the frames A, all Yas set forth for thc-purpose specified. 2.
