LOUIS H. PERKINS, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO EDWARD MILLER & COMPANY, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION or CONNECTICUT.
ELECTRIC LAMP AND SHADE-HOLDER.
SPECIFIGATIONQforming part of Letters Patent No. 778,602, dated December 27, 1904.
Application filed May 18, 1904. Serial No. 208,517-
To all whmn it may concern;
Be it known that I, LOUIS H. PERKINS, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Meriden, New Haven county, Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ElectricLamps and Shade-Holders,of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
Hy invention relates to lighting-fixtures, and particularly to a new and improved means of fastening shade-holders thereto. Its object is to provide a device which is adapted to be readily attached to and detached from the fixture without disturbing any of the other parts thereof.
A clear comprehension of my new device will be had by referring to the drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an electric portable equipped with a shade-holder of my improved type. Figs. 2, 3, and L are relatively enlarged views showing the details of construction for attachment and support of Y the shade-holder.
1 is a base.
2 is a standard. 3 is the connection carrying the electric wires, preferably insulated as usual. 4 is an electric socket with a suitable switch. 5 is an incandescent bulb. 6 is a supporting-plate secured to said standard and provided with recesses and 61. 62 is a lug carried by said supporting-plate.
7 is a U-shaped clamping-plate. 70, 71, and 7 2 are projecting ears thereon.
73 is a corrugation in plate 7.
8 represents arms fastened at one end upon the plate '7, preferably by means of rivets, and supporting at their other ends a ring 9. This ring 9 may support a lamp-shade of any suitable form. By providing the plate 7 with corrugations 73 the end of the rivets or the means employed to fasten the arms 8 to plate 7 will be raised above the surface of the plate 6, so as to reduce friction.
Electric portables are almost necessarily assembled and disassembled in the manner deplaced on the market with the wiring complete, so that it is impossible to remove the lamp-socket. My invention provides a simple and cheap means for attaching or detaching a shade-holder without disarranging the electrical connections. 5
To secure my improved shade-holder to the standard, the clamping-plate 7 is placed upon the supporting-plate 6, the ears and 71 regtally, and then lifting it clear, the bulb passing between two of the arms 8 8.
What I claim is- 1. In an electric-lamp fixture of the character described, the combination of a standard, a small supporting-plate carried thereby, a U-shaped clamping-plate, a shade-holding frame carried by said clamping-plate, one of said plates having a plurality of projecting ears at its circumference, the other of said plates having a recess to correspond with one of said ears wherebysaid parts may be readily 75 scribed.
2. In a lighting-fixture, the combination of a supporting-plate and a clamping-plate adapted to coact with each other, a shade-holding framehaving arms secured to said clampingplate, said plate having a corrugation forming a, raised portion to which said arms are attached and means for securing said supporting and clamping plates together by a partial rotation.
3. In an electric-lamp fixture of the character described, the combination of a standard, a supporting-plate having a recess, a U- shaped clamping-plate formed of sheet metal Signed at Meriden, Connecticut, this 16th andhavingadownwardly and inwardly turned day of May, 190d.
LOUIS H. PERKINS.
