PATENT OEEIcE.
UMBRELLA-RIB.
SPECIFICATION o g p of Le e P e o. 777,999, dated December 20, 1904. Application filed May 12, 1904. Serial No. 207,599.
1'0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHALKLEY B. BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrella-Ribs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in means for connecting the cover of an umbrella with the ribs thereof; and it consists of eyes of novel construction and provision for firmly connecting the same with the ribs, as will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims.
Figures 1 and 2 represent elevations of a portion of an umbrella-rib embodying myinvention. Fig. 3 representsalongitudinalsection thereof. Fig. 4- represents a perspective view of the eye employed. Fig. 5 represents a section on line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 represents a section on line 3/ y, Fig. 1. Fig. 7 represents eyes and stems, each eye of which and its stem being adapted to be disconnected to form a single member, as in Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates portion of an umbrella-rib.
B designates an enlarged eye, from one end of which projects the reduced neck or stem C, said stem and the back of said eye being placed upon the rib at the outer or lower end thereof between the side Walls D D thereof, so that the main portion of the eye is outside said walls, so as to be convenient for sewing or stitching the relative part of an umbrellacover thereto.
The portions of the side walls I) of the rib contiguous to the portions of the eye at the back of the rib are bent inwardly, forming lips E E, which enter and embrace said portions of the eye, thus interlocking the eye with the rib, while the portions of the side walls forward of the eye are squeezed or compressed upon the stem (J, the latter being angular in cross-section, thus clampingthe stem and assisting in most firmly securing the eyes in position while the stem, and consequently the eye, is prevented from turning in the rib. The end of the rib is provided with theknob or ball F, as usual.
As a new mode of making the eyes, referring to Fig. 7, I may take a piece of flat Wire and cut and punch or perforate the same at proper places, so as to produce a plurality of eyes with intervening stems connecting the same, the stems then being severed at intervals, leaving an eye on one end of each stem, as in Fig. 4:.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction shown without departing from the general spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in each case to the same.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An umbrella-rib and an umbrella-coverattaching device therefor consisting of an eye, and a stem, the latter projecting integrally from said eye in the longitudinal direction of the rib, said eye and stem being separate from the rib, and said eye being interlocked with the rib.
2. In an umbrella-rib, acover-attachingdevice composed of an eye and astem, said stem projecting longitudinally from said eye and the latter interlocked with the rib.
.3. An umbrella-rib having a cover-attaching eye, a stem projecting from said eye and an inturned lip which interlocks with said eye.
4. An umbrella-rib having a cover-attaching eye, a stem projectinglongitudinally from said eye, of angular form in cross-section, and an inturned lip which interlocks with said eye, said rib embracing said stem.
CHALKLEY B. BALDWIN.
