Description

ISAACv noemer, or FAYETTE, Assienon To HIMSELF A-Nns. c. CROSBY,r
or MANGHESTEB., I0WA.
` Letters. Patent No. 77,l9$, dated .May 12, 1868. i
j' IMPROVBD `sro-MP#i:xrintcron.
Be it known that I,ISAAG 'J'. Bochum-'of Fayette, in thevcounty of Fayette, and State of Iowa, haveinvented a new and improved Stump-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the followingA isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will'enable those skilled in the art to make aud-use lthe'same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part: of'thisspecioation, in which.
Figure 1 is a front 'view ot'my improved machine, the cant-hook lever being removed.
A Figure is a side view ofthe same, and'shoiving the cant-hook lever Ain place.
Figure is a detail view of the vcant-hook lever. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. g My inventionv has for* its object to` furnish an improved machine for pulling stumps, raising and' moving heavy weightvs,'&c., which shall bc simple in construction, easily operated, and powerful in operation.
. And it consists inthe combination-of the head-block on frame', inclined legs, cylinder, andtoothed wheel with each other, and in the'combinatiomofthecant-hook lever with the toothed wheel, the whole` beingcone.
stucted and arranged as hereinafter. more fully described.
v A is the head-block or frame, which is made very solid and strong. To the under side of the forward part of which is attached the upper ends of the legs B, which-inclinek fort ward and sidewise, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. e i
To the rear part of the frame or block A,-.or toshort posts securelyandrmly attached thereto, is pivoted the upper end of oneor more inclined legs, C, as shown in ii'gs. 1 and 2.
` '.lhe'leg C is strengthened and secured in placeby the curved brace-bar D, the endsof which :tre'pivot'ed to the block or frame A., and the middle part of which is adjustably bolted Ato the said rear lieg C, so that the inclination of said leg may be changed according'as it isl desired to set the machine so as-to act vertically, or to'r have it draw or move the object rearward.\
'.lhe legs, when properly-adjustcd,are secured in theiriproper relativepositions-by the brace and connecting rods E, as shown in the drawings. l v
'F isa cylinder, the journnlsof which vwork in bearings'in the upperpart of the' -frame A, a little in front ofthe centre-ot'l said frame. v I A v v 'l'ovthe projecting endet' one or both the journals of said cylinder Fis securely and rigidly attached a wheel. G, having ratchet-teethformed in its face, as shown in gs. 1 and 2.
To thc cylinder Ffnear its'ends, are securely attached hooks for the attachment of tlleends of the chain -Thc cylinder F may begrooved spirally from the ends, towards the centre 'until the said grooves meet in the centre, as shown in tig. 1,4 said 'grooves serving us guides to the chain as it is being wound around the saidcylinder, p
Iis the lever, the end of which is slotted .to pass'over the wheel G, and .its`end is ulsonotched to ride upon the journal of the cylinder F. e
J is a pawl or cant-hook, pivoted to the lever I in such a position that thehook formed npon its lower end niay'take hold ofthe teethl of the lwheel G and revolve it.
' 'K is a spring connected to the lever I in' such away-that its free'end may rest against the upper engd'of the pawl J, and hold its'hook forward against the teeth of the said wheel i L is the holding-pawl, which is Apivoted to the block or frame A,in such a position that it may take hold of the teeth ofthe wheehG, and holdit while the panjld' is moving forward to take another hold.
M isA a spring attached to the frameor block A in such a position that its free end may restv against thelower part of the-pawl L, and hold it iip`against the teeth of the said wheel G.
are feet, having abroad surface lto beur upon the gro-und, and which are pivoted to the lower ends ofthe legs B, to prevent them' from being forcedinto the ground by the downward strain upon the machine.
By this construction and arrangement of the parts the machine rnay-he adjusted to raise the stump or other weight vertically, or so as to draw it rearward, at the same time raising itmore or less above the surface ofthe ground, as may be desired. Y
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patenti 1. The combination ofthe head-.block or frame A, inclined legs B and C, cylinder F, and toothed wheel Gr,y
with each other, substantially as herein shown :md described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the above, I claimk thefeet N pvoted to the lower ends of the supports B, substantially es described, for the purpose specied.
3. The. combination of the leverI and hooked pawl J with tlie toothed wheel G, substantially as herein show-n and described, and for the purpose set forth.` l i ISAAC J. BOGERT.
