Be it known that I, ANDREW J. RocK, of nion'Village, Northumberland county, State of Virginia, have l invented an Adjustable Last and Shoe-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto theletters of reference marked thereon,

making a part of this specification.

'- The nature o f my invention consists in two upright posts, moving or adjustable-Ain a. dove-tail groove in 4a.

basefhlock. The posts are graduated by a regulating-screw. Between the posts is an upright screw, upon which alclamp-llock rests crosswise. On this Vblock for base a screw-clamp or jaws operate in a dove-tail groove. The

jaws hold the last irmly,'whilst the last rests on each upright post, covered with leather or an el'dstic cushion.,l -The object of my invention is to make a boot or shoe-support and holder whilst ybeing sewed or pegged,l so as to avoid the uselof the last on the knees of the workman, and to enable him to work with his shoulders and chest ereot,vand preventhis stoopingover his Work, and injuring his health, as usually theresult.

In this block Gris also a dove-tail groove, H, in which'the jaws J J operate, and i are also regulatedand adjusted backward and forward, and are held firmly by the screw K, so as to'hold the last, Il, at top and enable the last to be adjusted to any position required Whilst the workman is sewing or pegging the shoe, fitted to the last. In place of the'last, at any time the workman requires to prepare his leather by stretching or hammering it, he'removes 'the last', L, and inserts a stone or iron plate (commonly called the lap-stone) in place of the last, and hammers and stretches the leather on this machine instead of upon thelcnee, as usual, saving an uncomfortable operation to the workman. i

What I claim as my invention, and,l desire to secure by Letters Patent, s vThe arrangement and combination of the adjustable posts C, screws D, E, and K, blocks A; and G, when adjusted and operated with the adjustablejaws J J, as herein described and for the purposes set forth.
