BLANKET OR STRAP FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,585, dated December 13, 1904. Application filed July 21, 1904. Serial No. 217,550. (No model.)
T @ZZ 1,071,077?, it 711,04/ cm1/cern:
Be it known that I, ZIMEA THOMAS BEATTY, a citizen of the United Statesn'esiding at Allen, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Blanket or Strap Fasteners; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for blankets, straps, belts, and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby the ends of a blanket, strap, belt, or similar article may be securely and quickly connected and disconnected.
A further object is to provide a fastening device which will be simple in construction, strong', and durable and which Will be automatically locked when engaged by the end of a strap or belt. m
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a blanket having applied thereto a fastening device made in accordance with my invention and showing the casing in dotted lines under the strap. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastening device and showing'in dotted lines one position which the cross-head may assume. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the frame or casing, which consists of an upper plate 2, the ends 3 of which are extended and have formed thereon inwardly-projecting prongs or teeth fl, by which the same may be engaged with a blanket, strap, belt, or similar article. The said edges of the plate 2 are bent inwardly at right angles to said plate, thereby forming the sides 5 of the casing. In one of said sides 5 is formed a series of notches 6. On the inner side of the plate 2 is riveted or otherwise secured the bottom plate 7 of the casing'. In the upper plate 2 is formed an elongated verticallylisposed opening or slot 9. i
l/Vithin the casing 1 is arranged a circular disk 10, on a portion of the periphery of which is formed a series of teeth 12, which are adapted to engage the notches 6 in the side edge 5 of said casing'. Secured to or formed with the disk 10 is an outwardly-projecting stem or shank 13, on the outer end of which is formed a transvcrsely-disposed cross-head .14.
In practice the casing l is adapted to be secured to the edge of a blanket or the end of a strap or belt by means of the prongs 4.. The shank or stein 13 is then turned or moved toward the upper end of the slot 9. which movement causes the teeth of the disk 12 to engage the notches G in the side of said casing, thereby turning said disk and shank to bring the cross-head 14. i nto alinement with the casing, in which position the cross-head may be engaged by elongated eyes or holes formed in the end of the strapor beltl. After engaging the strap with the shank 13 the end of said strap 15 is released. As soon as the end of said strap 15 is released the backward pull on the same will draw the shank 13 and disk 10 toward the opposite end of the casing, thereby causing' the saine to be rotated within said casing, and thus turning' the head 14 crosswise of the strap 15 and the eyelets formed therein, thus preventing the casual disengagement of the said strap 15 from the stem or shank 13, thereby securely fastening together the ends of the strap and blanket or other article to which the same is connected. When it desired to disconnect the strap 15 from the blanket or other article, the end of said strap is grasped and pulled, which will again move the stem or shank in the slot 9, causing the teeth on the disk 10 to engage the notches in the side of the casing, and thereby turning said crossliead into alinement with the eyelets or holes in said strap 15, in which position the strap may be readily disengaged from said shank.
A blanket or other article provided with a fastening' device constructed as herein shown and described may be quickly connected with and disconnected from the end of a strap and when so connected or disconnected will be automatically locked into engagement with the same, thereby preventing the casual disconnection of the parts.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring' a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details 0f construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
l. In a fastening device of the character described, the combination with a frame or casing having a slot formed in the outer side of the same, of a disk arranged in said casing, a stem or shank arranged on said disk and projecting through the slot in said easing, a crosshead formed on the outer end of said stem or shank, and means whereby when said disk is moved to one end or the other of said casing, said cross-head Will be turned in one direction or the other, substantially as described.
2. In a fastening device of the character described, the combination with a frame or casing having a slot formed in the outer plate, and notches formed in one edge thereof, of a disk arranged in said casing, teeth formed partly around said disk to engage said notches, a shank or stem formed on said disk and adapted to project through the slot in said casing, and a cross-head formed on the outer end of said disk, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In a fastening device of the character described, the combination with a frame or casing having a slot formed in the outer plate, and notches formed in one edge thereof, of a disk arranged in said casing, teeth formed partly around said disk to engage said notches, a shank or stem formed on said disk and adapted to project through the slot in said casing, a cross-head formed on the outer end of said disk, and means whereby said casing may be secured to a blanket, belt or strap, substantially as described.
4. In a fastening device of the character described, the combination with a frame or casing consisting of inner and outer plates, said outer plate having inwardly-bent side flanges forming side edge sof said casing, and having a centrally-disposed slot formed in the face of the same, and notches formed in one of said side edges, of a disk slidably mounted in said casing, teeth formed partly around said disk and adapted to engage said notches, a stem or shank formed integral with said disk and adapted to pass through the slot in said casing and to engage an eyelet in a strap or the like, a cross-head forme-d on said stem or shank, and means whereby said casing may be secured to a blanket, belt or strap, substantially as described.
In testimony Whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
