Description

PATENTED MAY .12, 1868. G. W. MILLER & J. STEVENS HUB FASTENING FOR BOOENTRIOS.
Letters Patent No. 77,77,dated May .12, 186 8.
IMlR-OV'EMENT IN HUB-FASTENING FOE EGUENTRIGS.
the 5x11211111: which in in tlgssefiefim haunt out mating and n: the same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Be it known that we, GEoneE W. MILLER and Janus D. Srnvsns, of Scranton, in the county or Lnzerne, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in HubJiastening for Eccentrics; and do hereby declare thatthe following isfla full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents an eccentric-wheel, and B its huh, which are cast together, and of any suitable size and material. Within the opening in the hub, through which the shaft to which the eccentric is to be secured passes, are two grooves, which are tapering in form. Within these grooves are placed two steel. dies, C, which, in general form, are wedge-shaped, being convex on one aide,
and concave on the other. On their concave sides is formed a series of teeth. The" large ends of these dies are bevelled, as represented. D represents a bolt, whose head-is made flaring or wedge-shaped. Thishead fits between the two large ends of the dies. The belt peases'through the hub,-and is provided on its outer end with a collar, E, and a nut, B. When the bolt is drawn outward, the tapering head forces the tyre dies apart, giving them an 'end wise motion. G represents the shaft, to which the hub is to be secured. When the diesmove apart, their teeth bear firmly against the shaft, and clamp it on two sides, and thus serve to station the hub, and secure it rigidly to the shaft.
- March, 1868.
Thedies, by means of the screw, can be made to clamp the shaft with any desirable pressure, so as to effectually prevent the hub from moving upon it. i
This arrangement makes a very'simple and permanent fastening, and one which will not damage the shaft.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The dies 0 U, and which are secured within the hub of the eccentric, and made to clamp the shaft, by-means of abolt with a tapering head, or othorequivalent, as and for the pnrpose.set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands and seals, this 2d day of- GEORGE W. MILLER. [r.. -s.] JULIUS D. STEVENS. [In s.] Witnesses:
