Be it known that LBEDFORD T. KAVANAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners and Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide an improved sashfastener which will operate to lock a vertically-sliding sash in closed or partly-opened positions and also to provide in combination therewith improved electric alarm mechanism which will be sounded when it is attempted to move the sash from the outside.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a broken vertical section on line 1 in Fig. 2 through the upper and lower sashes of a window and showing' my improvements in section; Figs. 2 and 3, broken plan sections taken on lines 2 and 3, respectively, in Fig. l; Fig. 8, a plan section of a plunger-latch casing; Fig. 4, a broken elevation of the stile at one side of the upper sash provided with a socket-plate forming one of the details of my improved construction; Fig. 5, an edge view of the stile shown in Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 a face view of the sash-casing against which the surface of the stile shown in Fig. 5 slides.

On the lower sash B is a spring plungerlatch D, having a casing'' fastened upon the sash. In the casing is a sleeve g, having a projecting head or handle portion f/ and formed at its inner end with a iange (/2. Secured in the outer end of the casing is a collar A7L", and a spring g3 around the sleeve and confined between the flange g2 and collar f/ tends normally to press the flanged end f/2 against the inner end of the casing-chamber. Extending through the sleeve is the shank or stem 72. of the plunger-latch, having the en gaging end /1/. A nut if on the outer end of the stem zy holds the latch against independent longitudinal movement in the sleeve. The engaging end portion of the latch presents a beveled corner /LB at its under side and an abrupt shoulder /1/1 on its upper side. Fastened to the plate u. at the lower end thereof, is a spring c', normally out of contact with the plate C. The sleeve g of the latch device is provided at its end with a laterally-projecting pin g", movable in a slot f2 in the casing f, which slot has lateral enlargements at opposite ends presenting shoulders f3 f4. The spring g3 tends normally to hold the latch with its head /t' in the extended position shown; but by drawing upon the handle g/ the head may be withdrawn into the casing and held there by turning the sleeve g to cause the pin g" to engage the shoulder f1. The latch may be locked in its extended position b v turning the pin g* over the shoulder f3. Then the window is closed, the latch when released extends just beneath the spring c. Any attempt to raise the lower sash or lower the upper sash IOO will cause the latch to press the spring e against the lower end of the plate C, thereby closing the circuit and sounding the alarm. Then the latch is withdrawn and locked in the withdrawn position, the upper and lower sashes may be freely raised and lowered without the latch entering' any of the sockets. lVhen the latch is released, it will enter any one of the sockets (Z with which it may register, in which position it will prevent further opening of the window, and, if desired, it may be locked against withdrawal by turning the pin g* behind the shoulder f3 to prevent closing of the window. l/Vhen the latch is in one of the sockets, any attempt to raise the lower sash or lower the upper sash without first withdrawing the latch will cause the latter to engage the inclined surface of the spring e in the respective socket and press the same against the plate a, closing the circuit and sounding the alarm. The latch can only move a spring e far enough to contact with the plate t when it engages the upper end of the spring, as when the latch is forced against the shoulder CZ'. Vhile the latch is in the unlocked extended position the window may be closed by. exerting suflicient force in the closing operation to cause the inclined shoulders Z2 to retract the latch, and if the window is closed quickly the latch would jump over the ends of the springs, and thus would not sound the alarm.
rlhe window-fastening mechanism described forms a particularly strong and desirable means for locking the window eitherwhen closed or opened a short distance for ventilation, and the electric-alarm feature forms a certain and positive means for sounding an alarm in case any attempt is made to move either of the sashes from the outside.
Vhile I prefer to construct my improvements throughout as shown and described, they may be variously modified in the matter of details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined by the claims.
lhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with upper and lower vertically-sliding window-sashes, of a spring plunger-latch on the lower sash, an electricalarm circuit, a platoon the upper sash forming one of the terminals of said circuit and having a vertical series of sockets in the path of said plunger, a contact-plate forming the other terminal of said circuit and extending across the bases of all the said sockets, and inclined contact-springs in the sockets movable by engagement therewith of the latch to engage the contact-plate and sound the alarm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The Combination with upper and lower vertically-sliding window-sashes, of a spring plunger-latch on the lower sash, an electricalarm circuit, a plate on the upper sash forming' one of the terminals of said circuit and having a vertical series of sockets extending through it in the path of the latch to be engaged thereby, each socket presenting an abrupt upper shoulder, forming a stop, and an inclined lower shoulder, a contact-plate, forming the other terminal of the circuit, behind and parallel with said socket-plate and insulated therefrom, and inclined springs in said sockets movable under engagement therewith of the latch to press against said contact-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. rlhe combination with upper'and lower vertically-sliding window-sashes, of a spring plunger-latch on the lower sash, an electricalarm circuit,a plate on the upper sash forming one of the terminals of said circuit and having a vertical series of sockets extending through it in the path of the latch to be engaged thereby, each socket presenting an abrupt upper shoulder forming a stop, and an inclined lower shoulder, a contact-plate forming the other terminal of the circuit behind and parallel with said socketed plate and insulated therefrom, inclined springs in said sockets, and a spring on said contact-plate extending beneath said socketed plate, all said springs being in the path of said plunger to be actuated thereby to sound the alarm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
