Description
@uiten g1g-frs strat @fitter EDWARD n. HOLZER, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 77,733, dated Ilfag/ 12, 1868.
mrnovsn scartato.
"diie Situatie-nient tn .ixi these ettersntent mit uniting @im nt the sume.
` TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. HLZER, of' Philadelphia;Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in scaffold; and I-do hereby declare 'thefiollowing to be a full,-fclear,`..and exact description of the saine.
My invention consists of asca'old, composed-ot" aseries ot`- posts, eadb"liin'ged. to avbase-piece resting en the ground, 'and on each of which slides a brackct'foruthe support o fla platform{'tlicwhole being constructed a'nd arranged, substantially as described hereafter, sofas to'fformla light, portable-,and safe 'eontrivance for supporting planks'in front ot a building.- l l i In order t4 enable others to make and use'my'inrcntion, I will now proc-eed to describeJ the modecf constructng and using vth'e same, rei'crence'being-hza'd tothe aceompatrying-drawing, whicnforms a pai-tof this specification, and in whichv 'l A Figure 1' is aside view ot' my improxl'ed'scaold.
Figure 2, a sectional elevation of the same.' v
Figure-3, a sectional plan .view on the line 1 2, fig. 2.; and
Figure -4 represents one ot' the posts of the's'catilold, with the sections detached from each other.
A is one of the posts ot' the scaffold, and is pivotcd at the lower en d to a base, B51 the posts, as secnin iigs. 1 and 2, consisting of three sections, 'a, al, and a?, fitted to each other, as shown, and secured together by suitable bolts, b. The number of these sections may `beincreased o r diminished, so as to lengthen orshorten the post, according to thc height of the building'against which it has to bc' erected,th'e upper section aand lowest section, a2, however, being always 'a portion of' thc post,A no matterhow manyintermediate sections there may be between them. f
A bracket, C, is arrangedito slide up and down the post, in the opposite'sides of which are grooves, e, for 'receiving the lbent .ends of plates 4c, secured to the bracket. l A
This bracket is operated by means of blocks and tackle, one ot' the blocks, being secured to the bracket, J
and thc other block, d', to the uppermostsection, a, of the post.
In raising the post to the wall,` X, against which it is to be placed, the operation is facilitated by the base piece B, which rests upon the surface of the ground, and bears with one end against the wall of the building,
ashownvin iig. 1. When elevated to a vertical position, thc postmay be secured by inserting the bent ends of the rodsf(the opposite ends of which are. connected to thc postl'into the eyes ot" the shutter-hinges, or, when therear-inooutside shutters, the rodsfmaybe connected byA lightscrews to .thcsills' of thc window-frames.
Two or more of these posts, A, are tliussecurcd in front of the building upon which it is intended to work,
and the platform on which the workmen stand is laid upon the brackets, C, andvmay be raised or lowered t o any desired extent by means of thebloeksand tackle-illustrated and described. To prevent accidents which might occur-from the yielding of the tackle, a. rack, g, is let into the outer face of the post against which the bracket fbe'ars, and to the latter is hung a pearl, i, thc point of whchis adapted to the teetlrot' the rack, and prevents the' bracket from descending until'the pawl, by operating its' long arm, is' moved away from the rack; thc end ofthis arm being connectedto a rod, j, which passes through theupper portion of thc bracket, and on the outer end of .which is an enlargement, so' that the operator, stand? ing on the platform, can, while handling the'tackle-to raise or lower the bracket, control thcipawl bythe 'tv-oe of his boot', which can be insertedA beneath the enlargemcnt of the rod, j.
In some instances it may be desirable t'o have the brackets, C, and their platform in .close proximity to the walls of the building; in which casethe posts are reversed,'lso that the brackets shall be between themhnd the wall. Towards the `lower ends of the .posts the` grooves, e, for guiding the bracketsyare discontinued, so that,-on lowering the bracket to the base, it may be at once detached from the post byfmoving it outwards from ihelatter.
Itwill be evident that my invention possesses the'advantage of being light and portable, and of being 'readily erected in und secured to the front of the building.
The bracket is provided with a roller, tm, which bears againstithe face of the post, and prevents the lowerA portion ofthe bracket from coming in 4contact therewith; Undue friction, which would otherwise interfere with the free movement of the bracket, is consequentlyprevent'ed.
I do not claim an adjustable platform slidingon a post, the use-of blocks and tackle f0.1' adjusting such platform, or a paivl on the platform adapted to a ratchet on the post; but
I claim asmy invention, and.y desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A sca'old, consisting of two or more posts, A, each hinged to a base, IB, resting on the ground, and to each. of which islsecurecl an adjustable bracket, C, all substantially as described.
2. The grooves @arranged in opposite sides'of the post, for tbe reception of the bent ends of the plates on the brackets,.as set forth. l y
rIn testimony w hereof,`I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two lsubscribing witnesses.
EDWARD R. HOLZER.,
