HARnow-TOOTH FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentrNo. 776,394, dated November 29, 1904.
Application filed December 30, 1903. Serial No. 187,124. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known th at I, LYsANDER L. HAwoRTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrow-Tooth Fastenings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in harrow-teeth and the fastening means therefor; and the object of my invention is to form an improved harrow-tooth of the spike type which can be quickly secured to or removed from the tooth-bar.
A further objectof my invention is to provide an improved construction whereby two of the teeth may be secured to the tooth-bar by means of a single fastening means.
A further object is to provide a spike harrow-tooth which is double-pointed, so that when one point becomes worn the tooth may be quickly reversed and the other point brought into position for use.
In the drawings, wherein a preferable embodiment of my invention is shown, and wherein like letters of reference refer to similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a front elevation of the harrow tooth-bar with one of the teeth secured thereto. Fig. 2 is-a front elevation of the harrow tooth-bar with two teeth secured thereto by a single fastening means. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tooth-bar.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, D is a tooth-bar formed of channeliron. B represents theteeth, which are formed by bending a straight bar at its center at right angles to form the arms b', which are sharpened at their extremities to form the points b2 3. 'Ihe tooth-bar D has in its lower flange Z a plurality of apertures E, which are slightly larger in diameter than the diameter of the teeth B, and in its upper flange d a plurality of slots F, which are of the same width as the diameter of the apertures E and which extend rearwardly from the front vedge of the flange d" to a point directly over the apertures E in the lower flange (l of the tooth-bar.y
rIhe tooth-bar D is also provided in its upper and lower flanges CZ and d, adjacent each of the apertures E and slots F, with registering apertures H and l, which are adapted to receive a Cotter-pin or locking-bolt J. The distance of the apertures H and I from the apertures E should be slightly less than the length of the arm of the tooth B for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
The manner of inserting the tooth is as follows: rIhe arm 7/ is passed point first through the slot F and apertures E in the tooth-bar, the slot F permitting' the arm L of the tooth to pass the upper flange d and rest on the lower flange CZ of the tooth-bar D. The tooth is then turned to cause the arm o to swing toward the apertures H and I and to liebetween the upper and lower flanges d and Z of the tooth-bar D. The locking-bolt J is then secured in the apertures H and I, and as the distance from the apertures H and I to the apertures E is slightly less than the length of the arm Z) the bolt J will overlie the end of the arm b of tooth B and confine the same within the body of the tooth-bar D.
When I desire to secure two teeth with a single fastening means, I form the tooth-bar D with the apertures E and slots F at a distance apart slightly less than twice the length of the arm of the tooth B and with the registering apertures I-I and I intermediate the apertures E E. I/Vith this construction it will be seen that when teeth are placed in two Vof the adjacent apertures and swing toward each other the ends of the arms b of such teeth will overlap when said arms are confined in the tooth-bar D and that a single fasteningbolt will hold both of the teeth in position.
' I/Vhile I have shown the arms and of equal length and both pointed, so that the tooth might be reversed when one of the Ypoints became worn or pointed, I do not desire to limit myself to this. precise construction, as it is obvious that the arm of the tooth might be made any length, so long as the holes H and I were so positioned that the bolt J when secured therein would overlie-the arm b when in its position between the flanges Z and cl' of the tooth-bar.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a harrow, a channeled tooth-bar, provided with an aperture therein, a tooth journaled in said aperture and having a laterallyprojecting portion arranged to lie within the channel of the tooth-bar, and means for securing said projecting portion within said channel.
2. In a harrow, a channeled tooth-bar, provided with an aperture therein, a tooth journaled in said aperture and having a laterallyprojecting portion arranged to lie within the channel of the tooth-bar, and a locking-bolt for securing said projecting portion within said channel.
3. In a harrow, a channeled tooth-bar provided with an aperture in one of its ianges, a tooth journaled loosely in said aperture and having its upper end bent to form a laterallyprojecting portion arranged to lie between the flanges of the channeled tooth-bar when the tooth is turned in the aperture, and means for locking said projecting portion between said iianges.
4. In a harrow, a channeled tooth-bar provided with an aperture in one of its flanges, a tooth journaled loosely in said aperture and having its upper end bent to form a laterallyprojecting portion arranged to lie between the langes of the channeled tooth-bar when the tooth is turned in the aperture, and a lockingbolt passing through both iianges in the toothbar and arranged to overlie the projecting portion of the tooth and hold the same coniined between the flanges of the tooth-bar.
5. In aharrow,achanneltooth-bar provided with an aperture therein, a tooth journaled in said aperture and having a laterally-projecting portion arranged to lie within the channel of the tooth-bar when the tooth is turned in the aperture, to prevent longitudinal movement of the tooth through said aperture.
6. In a harrow, a channel tooth-bar provided with an aperture in its lower side and an openended slot in its Lipper side, said slot directly overlying said aperture, a tooth journaled in the aperture in the lower side and provided with a laterally-disposed portion, said laterally-disposed portion being arranged to pass through the slot in the upper side of the channel-bar when the tooth is inserted in the Vapei-, ture in the lower side and to lie within the upper and lower sides of the channel-bar when the tooth is turned in said aperture, and means for locking said projecting portion within the upper and lower side of the channel-bar.
7. In a harrow, a channel tooth-bar provided with an aperture in its lower side and an openended slot in its upper side, said slot directly overlying said aperture, a tooth journaled in the aperture in the lower side and provided with a laterally-ilisposed portion, said laterally-disposed portion being arranged to pass through the slot in the upper side of the channel-bar when the tooth is inserted in the aperture in the lower side and to lie within the upper and lower side of the channel-bar when the tooth is turned in said aperture, and a locking-bolt passing through both sides of the channel tooth-bar and arranged to overlie the projecting portion of the tooth-bar.
8. In a harrow, a tooth-bar provided with a pair of apertures, a pair oi' teeth journaled in said apertures, each of said teeth having a laterally projecting portion, and a single means for securing the laterally-projecting portions to the tooth-bar.
9. In a harrow, a channeled tooth-bar provided with a pair of apertures on one of its sides, a pair oi' teeth journaled in said apertures, each of said teethbeing provided with a laterally-projecting portion, said laterallyprojecting portions being arranged to lie within the channel of the tooth-bar with their ends overlapping when the teeth are turned in the apertures, and a single means for locking the projecting portions within the channel of the tooth-bar.
10. In a harrow, a channeled tooth-bar provided with a pair of apertures on one of its sides, a pair of teeth journaled in said apertures, each of said teeth being provided with a laterally-projecting portion, said laterallyprojecting portion being arranged to lie within the channel of the tooth-bar with their ends overlapping when the teeth are turned in the apertures, and a locking-bolt passing through the sides of the channeled tooth-bar and arranged to overlie the overlapping ends of the projecting portions of the teeth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
