H. KOI-1N- REVERSIBLE COVER AND FASTENING FFiCASES, 6to.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,960, dated November 29, 1904.
Application filed February 5, 1904i Serial No. 192,204. No inodelfl To /tZZ mlm/lt t 'nutg/ concern:
, Be it known that l, MARCUS J. BAR'rLnrrT, a citizen of the United ,States ot' America, and a resident otl Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot' Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts in Reversible Covers and Fastenings for Cases, cc., oi' which the following is a speciiication.
My invention is particularly adapted for use on laundry-baskets or packing-cases which are to be shipped to an agent or consignee and afterward returned to the iirst shipper.
' 'The main objects oi my invention are to provide a suitable reversible cover upon one face of which may be permanently aiiixed the name and address of the lirst shipper, to whom the package is to be returned, and upon the other face of which may be placed the address of the agent or consignee to whom the package is sent bythe first shipper', and to provideimproved locking means which may be readily applied with either face of the cover turned upwardly.
I accomplish these objects by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan of a laundry-basket embodying my invention. Fig. 2is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a top plan of one of the locking members which are secured to the cover. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view et' one of the coacting locking members and handles secured to the body oi the basket, the handles being shown in the same position as in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 5is an elevation of saidhandle. Fig. 6 is a top plan of the locking member secured to the cover on the end opposite the locking member shown in Fig. 3.
In the device shown the body ofthe laundrybasket 1 is provided with a cover 2, which on one face thereof has permanently marked the address of the owner or shipper, as indicated by the dotted lines at 3 in Fig'. 1. On the opposite face of said cover is a tag with the name of the consignee, as indicated at 11 in Said cover is reversible and may be locked upon the basket 1 through the locking means thereto attached. The body or' the basket l has rigidly secured thereto on each side a handle 5, having its attaching-plate 6 provided with a socket '7 for receiving the projections 8 or 9 ot' the locking members secured to the cover 2. One otl said locking members consists of the plate 10, the tongue 11, and the projection B, which may be cast in one piece. This is secured to the cover by inserting the tongue 11 between the body ot' the cover and the brace 12 and rivetingsame, as indicated at 13, through the aperture 111 of the tongue 11. The other locking 1nember has a plate 15 provided with a tongue 16, which is likewise riveted between the brace 12 and the body oi' the cover at the opposite end. The plate 15 is provided with the apertured ears 17 and 18. The locking-arm 19 is pivoted to the ear 18 and has an aperture 2O arranged to register with the aperture in the ear 17 in suitable manner to apply a padlock for locking the parts together, as indicated at 21 in Fig. 1. The shoulder 22 pre vents the padlock from swinging around to a position at the side where a large padlock might interfere with the raising' oi the handle 5 on its pivotal connections 23. rI he plates 6 of the handle are apertured at 24 and riveted to the body 1 oi' the basket.
The operation of my device is as follows: Assuming that the basket is used by a laundry, the cover will lirst:be attached, as shown in Fig. l, with the name ot' the agent exposed, as at 1. The cover is attached by inserting the projection 8 into the aperture 7 on one of the handle-plates (5. The other .end of the cover is then lowered with the locking-arm 19 in the open position, as shown in Fig. 6. Said arm is then swung inwardly until the apertures 17 and 2O register with the projection 9, seated in the aperture 7 ot' the plate 6 at this end ot' the basket. A padlock will then be attached through the apertures 2() and 17, as indicated in Fig. 1. The agent, who will be provided with a key, will remove the padlock and cover, and when he wishes to reship the basket will reattach the cover in the reverse position with the address o1' the laundry, as at 3, on the top of the cover. Said cover will then be similarly locked to the body 1 ot' the basket.
It is plain that the invention may be applied to other packages, boxes, crates, &c., as Well as to laundry-baskets.
It will be understood that numerous details of the device shown may be'altered Without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not connue myself to such details except as hereinafter limited in the claims.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isA
l. A device of the class described comprising a bodypart open at one side, a reversible cover fitting said open side, a piece on the body part extending across the edge of the cover and having therein a socket located centrall y of the thickness ofthe edge of the cover, an arm pivoted to the cover at one side of the socket and having a projection adapted to engage the socket and secure the cover with either face exposed, and fastening' means at the other side of the cover, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described comprising a body part open at one side, a reversible `cover fitting said open side, a pair of socketpieces on the body part located at opposite sides of the cover and arranged symmetrically thereof, each of said socket-pieces extending across the edge of the cover and having therein a socket located centrally of the thickness of the cover, a fixed projection on one edge of the cover, lying in the plane of the cover and adapted to engage one of said sockets, and an arm pivoted to the other edge of the cover and having a projection adapted to engage the other socket and secure the cover With either face exposed, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described comprising a body part open at one side, a reversible cover fitting said open side, a piece on the body part extending' across the edge of the cover and having therein a socket located centrally of the thickness of the edge of the cover,
an arm pivoted to the cover at one side of the socket'a'nd having a projection adapted to engage t'he socket and secure the cover With either face exposed, fastening means at the other side of the cover, and means for locking said arm and preventing the projection from being withdrawn from the socket, substantially as described.
4. A device of the class described comprising a body part open at one side, a reversible cover fitting said open side, a piece on the body part extending across the edge of the cover and having therein a socket located centrally of the thickness of the edge ofthe cover, an arm pivoted to the cover at one side of the socket and having a projection adapted to engage the socket and secure the cover with either face exposed, fastening means at the other side of the cover, and said arm and body part having apertnred parts adapted to register with each other for receiving a padlock when the projection is seated in the socket, substantially as described.
5. A device of the class described comprising a body part open at one side, a reversible cover fitting said open side, a piece on the body part extending across the edge of' the cover, an arm pivoted to the edge of' the cover on a transverse axis and lying in the plane of the cover, said arm and piece being reciprocally formed for engagement with each other for securing the cover to the body part with either face of the cover exposed, means for locking the arm against being Withdrawn from engagement with said piece, and fastening means at the other side of the cover, substantially as described.
