Description
T. E. BATTERSON. FRUIT JAR.
No. 77,570. Patented May 5 ,18 68f.
T. 'E. BATTERSON, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
Letters. Patent No. 77,570, dated May 7 5, 18.68.
IMPROVED FRUIT-JAR.
flit: riddle merit in in than Esters 33mm zmt making at 1& same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that LIT. E; BATTERSON, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State ofiNeyv York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fruit-Jars; :and I do'herebydeclare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification. I I
' Figure l'is a perspective view of the top of a jar showing my improvement.
Figure 2, a vertical section.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding'parts in both figures.
My invention consists in combining loosely with the cover-of the jar, a wire clamp, capable of end motion,
so as to adapt to the holding-lugs if the cover is not placed on centrally, and also having a central coil to allow a degree of spring.
In the drawings, A indicates a jar, of ordinary form, and B a cover, fitting thereon, with packing-ring a between. The cover itself has nothing pe'culidr, except that the edge, 6, is turned down, in a flaring manner,
' to hug closely to thepacking, and produce a broad hearing.
The top ofithe cover has ears or bearings, c c} in which rests loosely a wire clamp, C, so as to move-freely endwisc. The ends, at d, of the" clamp turn down to engage with lugsff of the jar, and 'a coilor turn, g, is made in the centre to produce a degree of elasticity or spring. If desired, the coil; 9,:may be dispensed with.
The great advantage in this. invention is the free. movement of the-clamp "in the hearings c c, and the employment of the spring-coil g.
:By the free movement I accomplish two advantages: First, the turning of the clamp upon its axis allows the ends, (1 d, to strike under thelugs'ffl without the turning of the cover itself, as where the clamp is soldered fastto the cover; I therefore avoid both displacement and-cutting of the packing-ring, as where the covertis turned. Second, if the cover is not centrally applied on the jar, the free action ,allows the-clamp to move endwise to engage properly with thelugs. I H
The employment of the coil gives the requisite elasticity or spring to theclomp inengaging with the lugs, and it also serves as a handle by which to turn the clarnp down and np h I am aware that dwiro clamphas been solderedfnst to the cover, such I do not claims What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V The combination with the cover B, of the wire clamp G, restinglooselyin bearings 0, so as to have a free" turning and longitudinal movement, the whole arranged as described, and operating in the mahncr and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. T..E. BATTERSON. Witnesses:
J. A. DAVIS, H. S. FAIKCHILD.
