" TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. FORKER, of the city of Meadville, in-the countyof Crawford, end State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Mode of Constructing Paint-Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and-enact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference m 'arked' thereon.
Figure 1 represents all the'parts incomplete position as when in use, except the bristles.
Figure 2 shows all the parts clel't through their centres, the same letters referring to like parts in all the figures. I j I construct my brushes zis follows: Around the lower end of the wooden handle A, I fit the conical ferrule F, and above this I fix, with a rivet, the screw-ferrule'F, onwhich :the'nut 0 works. The cap D is made to'slip over the screw B, and is held against the butts of the bristles and upper rim of the band E by the nut G. The
band'E is made to c'orrespond with the size of th e brush required, and supplies the-place of'twine in ordinary brushes, and can be made of brass, tin, or other metal. When the brush is to be put together,=a suitable quantity of bristles is thrust, with their taper ends first, through the band E, and 'thelbutts made level'with the upper rim of E. Then the cap Dis put in place, and-they, handle A, with the screw B and ferrule F; fixed to it, is pushed up through the middle of the bristles till the conical ferrule wedges the bristles securely between it and the band, whe n the nut c faste'ns the whole inoiie. I
The object of the chnicaliferruleF is to prevent theloosening of the bristles by the shrinkage of thewooden handle.
I'do not claim the tightening of the bristles by the action of aoonical wedge 03 nut, when the same islforced either up or down, by turning the screw with the'brush-handle, when the said cone is surrounded with bands or staves insidethe brush but What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- I i The solidwooden handle A, of full length, with its conical ferrule F, which, in combination with the nut G,-op-erating on the cap D from above, holds allthe parts firmly together; when constructed as and for the purpose set forth. A I Witness s: WM. Hi FORK-ER.
JA'M-ss Buss,
A. CLARK.
