Patented November 8, 1904.
EZEKIEL WVHEELER, OF KINGFISHER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
FENCE-WIRE-FASTE NING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,295, dated November 8, 1904.
Application filed April 25, 1904. Serial No. 204,845 (No model.)
To aZl w/tom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZEKIEL WVHEELnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingfisher, in the county of Kingfisher, Oklahoma Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Wire-Fastening Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved fence-wirefastening device for securing the fence-wire to a post, so that the fence-wire is permitted to move longitudinally when contracted or expanded without exerting stress upon the post which would tend to move the latter; and my invention consists in a clip adapted to be at tached to a fence-post and embodying features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence-wire-fastening device embodying my improvements, showing the same attached to a post or picket and in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
My improved fence-wire-fastening device is here shown as a clip 1, made from a slngleplece of sheet metal and bent substantially in the form of the letter U to provide a pair of arms 2 to bear against opposite sides of a post or picket, and an intermediate portion 3 to bear against one side or edge of the post or picket. The length of the arms 2 is such that their outer ends project beyond one side of the post or picket, and the said projecting ends are provided with reversely-arranged slots 3 4:, the slot 3 opening downwardly and the slot L opening upwardly. The arms 2 are also here shown as provided with openings 5 for the insertion of a screw, bolt, or other suitable device to be passed through the post or picket and employed to secure the clip thereto. The wire (indicated at a) is placed in the reverselyopening slots 3 4, which admit of the insertion of the wire and prevent it from becoming casually disengaged from the clip. The inner portions of the reversely-directed slots 4 5 are directly opposite each other in the same horizontal plane,- so that the wire in said slots and between the arms 2 is not bent and is free to move longitudinally without exerting lateral stress against the post which carries the fastening device. The intermediate portion 3 of the clip, which bears against one side of the post or picket, coacts with the screw, bolt, or other device in securing the clip to the post or picket and prevents the clip from turning under the weight of the wire on said screw, bolt, or other securing device.
My improved fastening device while serving to securely connect the fence-Wire to the post or picket admits of longitudinal movements of the wire when contracted or expanded Without affecting the post or picket and moving the latter therewith.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with a fence post or picket, of a U-shaped clip disposed transversely thereon, having its intermediate portion bearing against one side thereof and its arms bearing against opposite sides of the post or picket and projecting beyond one side thereof, the projecting portions of said arms being provided with means to engage and support a fence-wire, and means securing the said arms of the clip to the post or picket, the said intermediate portion of the clip which bears against one side of the post or picket preventing the clip from turning on the said securing means under the weight of the said wire, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a fence post or picket, of a U -shaped clip disposed transversely thereon, having its intermediate portion bearing against one side thereof and its arms bearing against opposite sides of the post or picket and projecting beyond one side thereof, the projecting portions of said arms being each provided with a vertical slot, one of said slots being open at its upper end and the other being open atits lower end, a wire passed through the said slots, and a securing device In testimony whereof I have hereunto set extending transversely through the arms of my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 10 the clip and through the post or picket, the nesses.
said intermediate portion of the clip which 7 5 bears against one side of the post or picket, EZEKIEL E preventing the clip from turning on the said WVitnesses: securing device under the Weight of the said BENJ. Gr. CoWL,
Wire, substantially as described. I G. H. GRIESBAUER.
