SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 774,176, dated November 8, 1904.
Application led February 26, 1904. Serial No. 195,382. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
. City, in the county of Dewitt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foundations, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in foundations, and refers particularly to a foundation for monuments and tombstones.
The object of my invention is the provision of a foundation which will form a perfect base or support for the monument or tombstone, which will prevent decay or wear at the base of the monument, which will keep the monument dry and cleanV and carry o all moisture or dampness, which will be of ornamental and attractive appearance, and which, all things considered, will be inexpensive, which will last a lifetime, and which will be practical in every particular.
lVith the above-stated objects in view my invention consists of a foundation embodying novel features of construction and combinations of parts for service substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure l represents a vertical central sectional view of my foundation, and Fig. 2 rep-V resents a top plan view of the foundation.
In the drawings the letter A designates a ditch or trench of suitable size and depth.
B designates a layer of heavy or large broken stone placed in the ditch and tamped or driven down properly.
C designates a layer of smaller or finer stone placed on the layer of larger stones, and embedded in the layer of liner stone C are the monument-supporting slabs D D, which support the monument-base H and the four inclined slabs E, around which inclined slabs is placed the coping F.
It will be observed that the monument-supporting slabs are embedded in the layer of fine stone, andl surrounding the said slabs is the layer of fine stone, which forms a filter G around the entire slabs and also serves as a filter for the rain or moisture which is conveyed by the inclined slabs within the coping.
It will be apparent that the slabs at all times support the tombstone or monument in proper position and that it is absolutely impossible for dampness or moisture to gather at the base of the monument or tombstone, thus insuring cleanliness and preventing decay, and also that a perfect support is provided and one which is of extremely attractive and ornamental appearance. The inclined slabs E are provided with grooves E and at their upper' and lower edges are formed with exits or discharge-openings E2, the grooves and discharge-openings serving to convey the water away from the base H of the monument and discharge it into the filtering mass G, and in this manner dryness, cleanliness, and durability are insured.
I claim- 1. A foundation consistingI of a lowerl layer of large broken material, a layer of finer broken material resting thereon, monumentsupporting slabs embedded in the layer of finer material, and slabs surrounding the monument-supporting slabs and arranged to convey the moisture or dam pness away from said monument-supporting slabs.
2. A foundation consisting of a lower mass or layer of large broken material, and an upper layer of 'finer material forming a filtering'- base, monument-supporting slabs embedded in said filtering-base, drain-slabs surrounding said monument-su pporting slabs and arranged at an incline and a surrounding-coping or inclosure. f
3. A foundation consisting of a supporting mass, a coping resting upon said mass, a monument-base supported upon the mass, and slabs for draining or conveying the water away from the base into the mass.
4. In combination with a ditch or trench, a
lower layer of material, an upper layer of material supported thereon and forming a iltering or draining' mass, supports resting upon said filtering mass for supporting a monument or tombstone, and means for carrying or draining the moisture from the said supports into the filtering mass.
