UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'
JOSEPH C. TAYLOR, OF ROANOKE, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MONUMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,254, dated December 2, 1873; application led October 23, 1873.
`constructing tombs, whereby the tomb and slab are firmly secured together.
It will iirst be fully described in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
I rst build an arch, A, Whose top, a, is preferably made flush with the sluface of the earth, and upon this base or support I form a tomb, B, of rock-lime, sand, and Water. The
length, width, and height are matters of option, and will be suited to the particular circumstances of the case. This forms a solid structure, which is level on top. Upon this top I place a mold, of larger dimensions at the base than the top of tomb, and in this mold cast plastic mortar made of hydraulic cement, sand,
and Water. The latter forms an artificial slab, which becomes cemented and indissolubly united to the subjacent tomb.
Of course the configuration of the slab may be modified to suit different tastes.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A grave-cover consisting of a base or pedestal, B, of masonry, and a slab, O, composed of hydraulic cement, sand, and Water, or equivalent ingredients, to form artificial stone, the same being,` molded upon said base, substantiallyT in the manner described, and for the purpose set forth.
