PATENT OEEicE.
CHARLES AUGUSTUS ADAMS, OF SANCO, TEXAS.
IMPLEMENT ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,143, dated November 8, 1904.
Application filed January 28, 1904. Serial No. 191,049. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES AUGUSTUS ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sanco, in the county of Coke and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implement Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for implements or tools in which the handle is gripped in using.
The object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the handle of tools and implements-such as hammers or hatchets and pitchforks, shovels, and the like-whereby the use of such tools and implements may be greatly facilitated.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in. the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the application of the device to a hammer. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the device detached.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a metallic band the ends of which are bent outwardly, forming lugs or ears 2, in which are formed alined apertures 3, one of which is threaded. A clampingscrew 4 is engaged with the apertures 3, by which the ends of the band 1 may be brought together, thereby enabling the band to be clamped on the handle of a tool. To the side of the band opposite the clamping-screw is riveted or otherwise secured one end of a short strap 5, to the opposite end of which is secured a strap 6, having at one end abuckle 7, which is adapted to be engaged by the opposite end of the strap 6.
In the application of the device the band 1 is slipped onto the handle of the tool, and the screw 4 is turned to clamp the band tightly in place on said handle. The strap 6 is now buckled around the hand or wrist of the party using the tool and who then grips the handle of the tool in the usual manner.
By the use of a device as herein described 'IIGSSGS.
the handling and use of tools and implements is facilitated in that the hand of the user is relieved from considerable strain caused by the tight gripping of the tool-handle, and when used with implements such as pitchforks part of the weight in lifting the loaded fork will be shifted from the fingers to the back portion of the hand and wrist.
A further advantage of a device of this character is that the tool-handle may be temporarily released without being dropped or laid down to permit the use of the hand for other purposes, thereby saving the time and labor of laying down and picking up the tool each time it is desired to use the hand for another purpose.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device for use in supporting tools or implements from the wrist and relieving the hand from gripping strain, comprising a wrist-engaging member, a tool-handle-engaging member, and a short flexible connection between said members to permit free movement of the hand and tool, said connection being arranged to lie at an angle to and connect the upper portions of said members on the inner side of the wrist and of a relative length to extend taut between the same to permit the handle-engaging member to engage the tool handle in rear of the portion grasped by the hand in using the tool and to retain the tool in such position while grasped against forward movement, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- CHARLES AUGUSTUS ADAMS.
