CHARLES SPIES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHIRT-WAIST HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,000, dated November 1, 1904.
I Application filed April 13, 190 Serial No. 202,982. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SPIEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Shirt-Waist Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined shirtwaist and skirt holder, the object of the invention being to provide a device of the nature referred to which will obtain a firm hold on the shirt-waist and skirt-band for supporting the skirt and holding down the shirt-waist, the device under the preferred embodiment of the invention being adapted to also engage a belt for the purpose of properly positioning the belt at the junction of the shirt-waist and skirt.
It is also an object of the invention to so combine the skirt-holding and waist-holding features of the device that they mutually contribute to hold each other in position whereby the weight of the skirt is utilized to maintain the engaging portions of the device in their operative positions with respect to the shirtwaist and skirt.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a combined shirt-waist and skirt holder embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, showing a belt and portions of a shirt-waist and skirt connected therewith. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the frame of the device and other parts are bent up.
Like reference-numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures 0f the drawings.
The combination device contemplated in this invention is composed, for the sake of economy and by preference, of sheet metal, the original blank beingsubstantially rectangular in shape, as shown in Fig. 3, and a slot 1 being cut into one edge of the blank, as best illustrated in Fig. 3, said slot contracting inwardly to form a narrow inner portion 2, in which the shank received and held.
of a button or stud, hereinafter referred to, is The blank is also cut through on the lines 8 and i to form a substantially rectangular catch-sustaining flange 5, which is bent outward from one side of the blank and recurved or extended substantially parallel to the body portion of the blank in the manner illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. A portion of the metal at the projecting end of the flange 5 is cut away, leaving tabs or projecting portions 6, which are rolled into the form of sleeves 7 to receive the oppositelyprojecting pintles or journals 8 of a pivoted catch comprising a cam or biting-edge portion 9 and a lever or finger operated portion 10, the portions 9 and 10 being arranged at opposite sides of the pintles 8 and projecting substantially at a right angle to each other, the cam portion or biting edge 9 when in operative position extending inward toward the body portionv 11 of the frame and serving to clamp the skirt or skirt-band against the frame. It will be observed that the flange 5 has a spring action or is adapted to yield toward or away from the body of the frameplate, so as to accommodate a waist-band of greater or less thickness between the catch and the frame-plate. The upper portion of the blank is bent over to form a hook 12, comprising the side portions 13 of the blank and the connecting portion 14:, which is left by cutting through the blank on the lines 3 and 1. The construction just described provides a long hook for engaging over the upper edge of the belt 15, as shown in Fig. 2, and relatively braces the side portions 13 of the frame.
In connection with the frame hereinabove described I employ a headed button or stud 16, the shank of which is adapted to be inserted in the slot 2-and the head 17 of which is preferably enlarged so as to admit of the same being attached at the points 18 to a pair of flexible connections 19, the opposite ends of which connect with the frame at or near the opposite lower corners thereof, as shown at 20.
21 designates a portion of a shirt-Waist, and
the frame and the catch 9 10 and fastened securely by pressing the catch inward and conlining the skirt-l; and between the cam or biti The but- -j ing-edge portion 9 and the frame. ten or stud 16 is then lifted and pressed into the fabric of the shirt-waist, and while the head of the button or stud is covered with the fabric of the shirt-waist it is inserted in the slot 1 2, whereupon by pulling downward. on the skirt the stud is forced into the inner end of the slot 2, which serves to firmly engage and confine the fabric of the shirt-waist, and at the same time the covered stud exerts an upward pressure against the cam or bitingedge portion 9 of the catch, thereby locking the catch, the weight of the skirt thus acting to hold the catch in its clamping position and prevent accidental escape of the parts held by the catch and button. By slipping the hook 12 over the upper edge of the belt the shirtwaist, skirt, and belt are all properly positioned with respect to each other.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A combined shirt-waist and skirt holder comprising a frame-plate having a notch in an edge thereof, a catch pivotally mounted on said plate, and a button insertible in the notch for pressing upwardly against said catch.
2. A combined shirt-Waist and skirt holder comprising a frame-plate having a notch in an edge thereof, a catch pivotally mounted on said plate and extending over the notch, and a button insertible in the notch for exerting pressure against said catch.
3. A combined shirt-waist and skirt holder comprising a frame-plate provided with a downwardly-opening notch, a flexibly-attached button insertible in the notch, and a pivotally-mounted catch having a clamping portion located adjacent the closed end of the notch, said clamping portion held in clamped position by engagement of the button therewith.
4. A combined shirt-Waist and skirt holder comprising a frame plate provided with a notch in an edge thereof, said plate being pro vided with a spring-flange on one of its faces, a catch pivotally mounted on said flange, and a flexibly-attached button insertible in the notch for exerting upward pressure against said catch.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES SPIES.
