Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. Y. HUBBELL, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN TI-IE MANUFACTURE OF SAD-IRQNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Paent No. 77,379, dated Apr/il 28, 1868.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, A. Y. HUBBELL, of Elmira, in the county ot' Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvelnents in Sad-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section;
Fig. 2, a rear elevation, and Fig. 3 a side ele. vation.
This invention is an improvement upon the sad-iron patented by me October 1, 1867, No. 69,344 the nature of this improvement consistin g in castin g the top or hollow part with rivets, to which is cast the bottom part of the iron, the chamber being filled with some nonconducting substance.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and employ my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
v A represents the top or hollow part of my sad-iron, cast, as seen in Fig. 1, with the projections or rivets e e e. I ll the cavity with sand or cement, mixing therewithv salt or any other suitable substance which is soluble in water.- Ithen cast the lower part or bottom B over the lling, or on the under' part of top A. The rivets e e e will bind and hold the two parts more firmly together.
My object in mixing salt with the filling is that when it becomes dry the salt will tend to crystallize or harden it, and thus render it still more unsnsceptible to heat.
In place of this filling, the iron may be cast with an air-chamber, in which is placed a small quantity of water, or its equivalent, which, when heated, will expel the air, thus leaving a vacuum. The aperture is then tightly closed.
I prefer, however, the filling.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Casting the top or hollow part with rivets, upon which is cast the lower part of the iron,
.the intervening space or chamber being either supplied with a filling or a vacuum, created substantially for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aftxmy signature in presence of two witnesses. f
A. Y. EUBBELL.
