IMPROVED VAIIVE FOR SUGAR-FANS.
I tip firlgtbnlt Infant in in flgtst ittttcrs amt amt mating and of it time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LEWIS COLWE LL, ofthe city and county and. State of-New York, have invented a. certain new and improved Valve for Sugar-Pans; and do hereby declare the following to be s t full, clear, and exact description of the same, refcrence being had to theannexed drawing making part of this specification, in which I Figure 1 shows a verticalsection through the centre of said valve, and
Figure 2 is a view of said valve turned bottom side up.
The object of this invention is to facilitate and more perfectly control the escape oi" the sugar from the pan. This object I accomplish by-makingmy valve-chest globular in form, and forming upon one side thereof a. nozzle, fitted with a poppet-valve. upon a stem running through the centre of said chest, and which stem is also fitted with a breaker upon its upper end, to break the crust which sometimes forms in the nozzle of'the valve-chest or neck of the pan, and which, whenthe old style of valve or cock is used, prevents theflow of the, sugar therefrom. r I
To enable those skilled in the-arts to whichmy invention appertainsto make and use the same, I will proceed to describe the construction and-operation thereof. V v
Similarletters of reference represent corresponding parts of the different figures in the annexed drawing. The valve-chest is shown in the drawing byvi a, the valve by b,.the valve-stem by d, the breaker by c, the valve-stemguideby e, and the lever for workingtlie valve by f.- I Now, let this chest be bolted to the neck'of 'the p an by the flange v,-so as to make a joint impervious to the sugar or air, and let it be desired to draw out the sugar from the pan. I i
The operator takes hold of the leverf, and, by a single impulse of his hand, opens the valve wide, and at the same time breaks-any incrustation s that may have formed in the neck of the pan or nozzle 'to the valve,
and leaves the sugar free to issue on all sides ofthe valve, throwing it against the curved wall of'the chest, which-is contracted at its lower end or mouth, so as to throw the sugar towards thecentre from all sides, thus drawing it in a concentrated stream into the receiver;
In practice, the-valve b ismnde of Indiasrubber, and the valve-seat is ridged up, so as to clear itself'of sugar, and insure a ti'ghtjoint under the valve, and the leverf is made longer than shown in the drawing, and is secured by any known mechanical means to hold the valve tightly against its seat.
One end of the valve-stem guide e is fitted into a mortise made in the chest of the valve, and the other is held by a screw, in a. flange'cast on the chest, which screw may be readily taken out,and by which the"valve-,
stem and'breaker can be taken out of the chest, leaving the opening of the pan entirely unobstructed.
. Having now described the object, nature, and practice ofmy inven tion, I claim, and desireto secure 'by Letters Patent-'- Y 1. In combination with a sugar-pan, a valve, enclosed in aglobular chest,arranged so as to concentrate the sugar into 1 solid stream as it issnes from the chest and pan into the receiver.
2. The use of a. poppet-valve enclosedin a chest, in combination with a sugar-pan, substantiallyas described. 3. The use of the'breaker c on the end of the valve-stem, to break the crust of. the sugar, and clear tlie neck of the pan or nozzle of the valve-chest, and allow a free exit for the sugar, substantially as described.
4. Armin in the valve-stem uide 0 in the chest, substantial] as desoriberh b which it, the valve-stem g a z: y .Y
and breaker, can beremoved out of" the chest, by simply taking out the screwin the endof said valvest em' guide.
